ATV2 + Jailbreak + XBMC = perfect little media player for my bedroom.

I have used none of the apple OS stuff other than streaming the odd HD trailer, before the jailbreak was released.

I'm getting an iPad 3 though :)

Not really, both are bit perfect and sound the same when plugged in to a Dac. To be honest I usually stream to my Airport Express but I do have a second Dac fed by an Atv2.

Pre-ordered, even though my seat was noticeably dry after Tim Cook's presentation. :(

By the way, you can save £25 if you go through topcashback and then shimmy your browser over to the HE store.

http://store.apple.com/uk_edu_xxxxxxx" (replace xxxxxxx with a code from the list on this page).

Also, before icefilms went down it was, as they say, full of win.

Other than icefilms (and the adult add-on) I never got on with xbmc on the appletv2. I felt it just wasn't quite up to it. It would judder a lot with HD and pretty much any codec other than h264, and would crash far too much. In the end I installed the "atvblack mediaplayer" by firecore*. So much smoother and zero setup. It's a shame as I like xbmc, but I just couldn't get on with it for the atv. Maybe once the new atv is jailbroken it will cope with it a lot better.

* Although I'm not promoting paying for this. Charging for a hack feels just wrong, especially $20 or whatever it is. A fiver and I might have considered it.

Thanks for the £25 tip ;) I'm going to wait until John Lewis open up orders. 2 year warranty as standard and I have some gift vouchers kicking about.

Did you ever try the Eden builf of xbmc Joe? Seems a lot better.

On ATV3, I might get one to replace ATV2 when a stable Xbmc is out.

The student link's pretty handy. Especially for a 15% discounted mac combined with free ipod or voucher, plus printer, plus the secret UK extended applecare for students. I saved about £500 when I bought Lu a macbook air. If you get a phonecall (you won't), then it's a present for cousin Billy at uni innit.

Personally, I used proxy details to log in to University of Brighton's intranet, but I'm not posting them. :D

I tried the last full release, the nightlies, and the latest final release (which is Eden right?). But it kept crashing. Maybe another full wipe and re-install would have done it but I'm pretty happy with mediaplayer now. It's as simple as can be. The main reason I'd like to use xbmc is for the scaling options as 720p + my TV + appleTV causes too much overscan.

I can't be arsed to dick around with it again now though. I'll put XBMC on the new one when it's jailbroken.

Highlight of the presentation for me was iphoto (63m30s in: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/1 ... index.html" ). Oh Randy that was magical. Image

Also, I liked the glimpse of a rainbow coloured apple logo at the end.

Erm, is it just me or does apple suddenly seem a bit more - how shall I put this? - Californian?

I am the only one underwhelmed by the new iPad. Granted I was never going to buy one but the increased screen resolution and faster processor were a given. They've already released one small upgrade to the iPad, what happened to the innovations?

innovations ? don't Apple just copy other peoples ideas and improve on them ? Can you use the new ipads in daylight yet ? is there a hdmi connection without the need for an adapter on the new ones ? The only thing I can see that Apple have over the competition is a super easy to use interface

Apple's "innovation" is never going to be anything outlandish like a transforming tabtop. They just get the basics so right.

I think sometimes the norm is so bloated with extras that filtering out the simple basics seems more innovative than it actually is. Apple also fine tunes the most basic features very very well, and putting your finger on what the basics should be is a lot easier said than done; Apple has (or Steve Jobs had) always had an impressive knack for this.

And why make an e-ink book reader? The kindle already does this perfectly for less than a quarter of the ipad's price.

But yeah, I was a little disappointed that the new ipad didn't have Senseg's tactile nipple stroking screen, but other than that, the amazing dpi (that I've been waiting for since I first got into computers) is enough for me to finally cave and buy a tablet - which will probably mainly just be used on the sofa.

There are other technologies for viewing screens in daylight apart from eink, Although to be fair I don't know if any of them are ready yet. Reg HDMI I would imagine there are a lot of users that use ipads for viewing movies\tv eps and would like to view them on their large screen tvs.
