Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
I shat it big time there.
An error occurred,
There is no backup......
I had to disconnect it, setup the location services & wifi, then it gives the option of restoring from could or itunes.
Selected itunes & now have "6 minutes" to wait

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
You'll get there and it'll be worth it. I had to try 3 times until the upgrade worked.
I can't seem to get the camera on the lock screen to show up though. Is there a special setting I wonder...

Had absolutely no problems updating the ipad 2 yesterday.

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
I had a quick look at the iPad and saw the same thing, iPhone worked straight away. I only use my iPad as a remote for my hifi and as a browser so no need for wireless syncing yet.kernow wrote:but it's apple and works so seamlessly

I have no idea why wifi sync isn't working, plugged ipad into laptop and ticked the wifi sync option, did a sync. disconnected and plugged ipad into power, the sync ipad option is greyed out and says it'll sync when the laptop is available - when the laptop is right next to it and both are connected to the same wifi access point
I am sure there will be an update soon.

Tips for IOS 5 :
(1) Camera on Lock Screen is double click twice of Home Button. Also kicks in Music Player which I like
(2) IMessage is part of Messages(?). The way I understand it is that if you have Wifi-Internet and so does the person at the other end, the text message will go across internet rather than telecom
(3) Noticfication Centre is swipe down from top bar
Anything else that is major?
PS - Whatsapp is free today.......... because of (2)!

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
Bonjour is utter, total ****. The number of PCs I've seen screwed by it is crazy, and if it doesn't cleanly uninstall you're in for a world of hurt. Ipodservice and ituneshelper (sic?) are also unnecessary, sloppy programming excuses for iTunes failings.
The original Windows release, years ago, was a decent bit of software. Windows Media Player is now at the same level, and it's fantastic.
If you're using Apple products with a PC nowadays you're mental

Must admit, I've never got on with itunes. At least on my mac it sorta just sits in the background without causing too much pain, but on Windows I thought it was a **** ten years ago and I take it it still is.
Funny thing is though, often people who don't get on with the whole file system hiearchy, completely understand itunes. Where I find dragging and dropping an mp3 file from users/documents/music/whatever to a USB drive is a piece of **** and itunes is a mystery - many others are the total opposite.

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
To be honest, that thing you were saying earlier about IT techs being a bit simple when it comes to diagnosing problems with macs is actually one of the reasons I like them. This is completely based on opinion, so let me get it out of the way that I'm really not trying to have a macs are great/**** argument.
But anyway, you know that mac saying that "it just works". Well there is also the other side where you accept "it just doesn't work"! Then you forget about it for a few days and wait for apple to (hopefully) fix it. Or you spend more cash. It's an easier but more expensive life.
...
I don't have any experience of the airport extreme and bonjour so I can't comment on those specifically. Sounds pretty sucky though as yeah, I thought it was supposed to be nice and easy. But I've always found networking to be a pain in the ****.

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
I hate iTunes. I'm indifferent about OSx, or whatever it is now, but the finish and design of apple stuff is miles ahead of the competition.
People moan about the cost, but to get a similar design and finish in any other tangible goods you need to pay a much bigger premium.
Say home electronics, a 40" tv from toshiba, LG, Panasonic etc will run somewhere between £400-1500. Walk into bang and olufson or Lowe an you are looking at £6,00-10,000 for a lower spec, older model with a massive e-dick of badge snobbery.
Handbags, clothes, cars. The mark up on the top end is much larger than apples. I appreciate the others are low volume, but think of the materials and design. I enjoy my iPhone, iPad and apple tv. There may be issues, but I can live with it.

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread

I remember when I worked at a local small design company when I was 20. They happily used the same macs for years and they were pretty solid at running pre-OS X quark/photoshop/illustrator round the clock. Often, if the boss had a problem, I'd chime in with "I know a workaround for that" and I'd fiddle with things to get them (mostly) working. I used to think the boss was a bit of an **** sometimes when he'd just say "nah, forget it it doesn't work" - when it could work. But now I think it's sometimes better to man up and stop wasting time fiddling, accept what it can do it does well, and what it can't it can't.
as for the airport extreme, I edited my last post, basically to say 'dunno'.

Re: Apple Fanboy Thread
Installed nae bother on my iPad 2 and 3GS but then I'm using a Mac and they get along better.
I've always found iTunes a bit messy by Apple's standards. It clearly does more stuff than they ever planned.
