Shmupmame

Post by mufunyo »

People probably already know about this, but for those who don't:

Some clever folks have figured out how to eliminate an extra frame of input lag out of a couple of mame drivers used by some shmups (notably psikyosh2 and taitof3).

Shmupmame Lagless Edition official release

I got linked to this from Tetrisconcept people, because psikyosh2 also happens to be the platform of tgm2p (TAP). Tested it and immediately noticed I was close to hitting personal records, even though I was playing really slow and **** overall. So yeah, give it a try, it's good :D.

I though the lag was there by design ? On Cave games.

Is it possible to extract the drivers and insert in the version of mame i'm using (0.129)??

I've only just set up my mame machine with nice frontend and all and don't really want to have to go back to ground zero all over again.

'some clever folks'? I only told him how to do it to indulge him since he's always going on about it. I put it there in the first place in a lot of cases!
Removing the sprite buffering leads to desynchronisation between the backgrounds and the sprites - proceed at your own peril.

You're thinking of the slowdown surely?

Lag in this context is the time taken from the input to the response on the screen. However, as I made clear in the original thread, this is intentional and present on the original hw. Much greater deciding factors are the choice of display (i.e. some LCDs cause huge lag, especially when not at native res), input device (USB keyboards or crappy drivers) etc.

Yeah I heard about that just now (as the reason given why mamedev won't include the patch officially). With Tetris, it doesn't matter for **** though, because the background is just an aesthetic element. I can imagine it being a problem with shmups.
