Top of picture dissapearing

Post by markedkiller78 »

I just noticed something weird on one of my monitors. When I stretch the picture Vertically a small (3-5mm) part of the picture disappears. When I shrink it down it’s all there.

It’s like the top line of the test grid disappears when I stretch the picture to 100%, but at 50% of the screen a full test grid would be displayed

Any thoughts?

frame foldover, caused by something feeding back in the vertical frame circuit
could be a cap, resistor, diode or even vert frame ic
my bet is thats its a cap somewhere
whats the chassis?

Nanao MS8 or 9. I'll get in about it at the weekend.

There's also some noise / interferance through the speakers, but all goes quiet if I turn the volume down. I'll check the wiring at the weekend too

I've done some tests It's only my Death Smiles that does this with the pic.

The monitor is fine. I can live with what's happening with DS too.

The sound interferance only comes through jamma / mono. The Stereo is spot on. I think there may be a break in the wire somewhere.

Now you mention it I noticed the picture sizing on Deathsmiles did that on my MS9. I got it pretty good between the pots and test menu.

There is a thread over at shmups regarding Cave resolutions. They must have altered things slightly with their hori's

Stupid question alert: How do you acess the test menu on DS? The test button on the astro does not work & I couldn't see one on the pcb?

also mark you need to hold the little button in for about 2-3 secs for it to boot into test.

Thanks Richard, I’ll have a look when I get home.

I’ve been playing DS non stop. I managed a 112m clear last night. I know I can improve on it though as I was sitting at 55m on the Volcano level when I “had” to stop playing last night. The other half is not impressed with how much time I’m spending with this game.

It’s so easy to get the 2 extends in this game, but I’m getting way off topic.

Many thanks peeps. The pcb itself had an option to move the pic. I moved it down 3 notches & Bob's your aunties bit on the side, good as new

I had *exactly* the same problem with my DeathSmiles PCB, too (and was worried something weird was going down with my monitor). It seemed to cut out halfway through one of the scanlines, and misses the top 2 above that (unless the screen was massively compressed vertically). Knocking it down by three lines on the PCB test menu sorted it, though! :)

(Off topic, DS is a great game! I've only had it two days, but it feels all Progear-like to me, which is a good thing in my book!)

Sounds like overscanning to me. I didn't know arcade monitors overscanned until I noticed that TGM3 renders at 640x448 instead of 640x480 (the rest is black bars).
