Key/Lock Identification

Post by MegaMac »

Hey there, everyone!

I'm needing to know what sort of lock this is and what sort of key it requires. It's surprisingly been quite a challenge figuring it out! I've seen a couple very similar, but not the same. This lock is on an early 90's Capcom machine, if that helps.

Major thanks to whoever can crack this lock, so to speak!

I’ve never owned a cab with one so am by no means anywhere close to and expert on this, plenty of others can probably chip in but it looks like a Miwa Magnetic lock like the ones Segae used to use.

Hope this helps a little.

It does help! Thanks! I believe I've seen those locks before but didn't catch their name. However, mine seems to have a smooth curvature in the opening whereas the one in the video has some ridges. Either way, this is certainly a step in the right direction. I assume these keys are keyed specifically their cabs and aren't necessarily universal? Probably a stupid question, as thievery is a thing. It'd be super easy to just find a key that would work though!

If it's an original lock, it could be one of these:

They’ll be keyed differently between cabs. Typically cabs also have to different keyed lock sets. One set does all the panels required for servicing and the one for the coin box is different to the rest.

Normally the keys have an ID on them to identify for spares but locks don’t always have an ID on them. It will be somewhere on the body if it is so it remains unseen from then on secure side.

Whether you can get repro versions of these locks I don’t know as I’ve never had to replace one so not investigated, but original Sega ones are sought after for restorations and do come up for sale now and again.

Someone did tell me before that there indeed may be a key on the inside. Which is what I'm hoping is the case. If I could just get it open. They recommended trying to jimmy it open somehow, however that may be too destructive.

Anyone have any tips for maybe getting it open with any particular tools?

The video I posted showed how to pick the lock if you fancy giving it a go :awe:

You’ll need to make a magnetic pick as he says. As long as the magnet is superglued and can’t get stuck in the lock you’ll probably just loose your patience I know I probably would

Alternatively if you could get a hacksaw blade in to the gap between the panel and then body to cut the lock tang/tongue that will be easier to replace than the lock. But not ideal. What cabis it for? Capcom impress?

Might be worth having a read of these threads too.
