Operator sales and statistics from another life

Post by aerobert »

This was posted at the swedish forums. Thought it would be a nice topic to buzz about. Driving games was still very much a thing in 1990. And DJ Boy was...not...appreciated by operators.

Its an amazing amount of good games there for mid 1990 pre sf2 and mvs , and proper machines for a lot of those i'd guess some of the drivers lists mimics our local arcades back then.

that 7% distruibution for dj boy must have just been 1op buying it and must be pretty true for everywhere ...i cant remember ever coming across it in the wild.

<trk>:I remember catching a big fat one and my friend said "throw it back in, that one already tastes like wood"

I need to check the original source of this material, because I believe the term "flippers" was only used in Sweden and Germany, yet it's in english.

EDIT: On second thought. I think it was called Flipper in any non english speaking european country.

Best new videos - Mercs.

Would have only been out three months when that was published. Would love to know how the distribution percentage went with that in the end.

So basically buy TMNT, WWF, Final Fight and some racers for a successful arcade, I think everyone knew this.

Also Mercs ftw

Sounds about right!

I wonder what genre creates the most revenue? I'd put my money on side scrolling beat em ups. If I remember correctly, they were definitely the games I kept pumping money into to see what came up next. On the flip side, you also got a real sense of getting value for your 10p.

It was beat em ups and sports games for me before the fighting wave but World Warrior was in almost every arcade. Also usually would see a Raiden or UN Squadron type game around. I put a metric **** ton of money into NBA Jam, Blitz, there was an NHL game. Also stuff like Golden Axe, Final Fight, Aliens vs Predator, Simpsons, even if I had beaten these games before I always wanted to do it again. Konami beaters esp were money makers, then I think Capcom took over a bit. As much as I liked Neo Geo we never had that **** in the US, maybe a random Slug game in every arcade but most of the Neo stuff I ever got to play was at home. When they started doing the big light gun/theme machines like HOTD, Top Skater, Daytona, Star Wars Arcade, those were also token sinks most were $1 per game vs. paying 25c or 50c to play Killer Instinct instead

Sega, Taito and Konami were big hitters in EU but we had a lots more obscure japanese stuff in the 80s at least up in Sweden, much thanks to the huge operator we had here (you've all seen the pcb's with a red label and white embossed lettering). Neogeo was also huge in Europe in the 90s.

Also, Konami games were such coinmunchers it wasn't even funny.

I've great memories of absolutely lashing 10p coins into a Konami Turtles machine in a smokey pub in a little Irish town in Wicklow. They must have made a fortune from the thing.

Speaking of such events. There are stories that the most common fault for The Addams Family and World Cup Soccer pinball machines was the cash box and coin chutes being full of coins.
