Games you took a while to warm up to

Post by TheRedKnight »

There are arcade games you instantly feel drawn to the first time you see them, and then there are those games you've known about for ages, decades even, yet never paid any attention to until... <insert your lame excuse here>

I got the Sega Ages version of Shinobi for the Switch among a bunch of other games just because it was so kheap (all non-Sonic Sega Ages titles are on sale, go get 'em) and gave it a quick go. I've probably never even tried it before, always thinking the konsole ninjerz gamez by Sega were superior and thus this was just an instant pass (I wonder what influenced that sort of thinking? Probably some review claiming a bunch of nonsense), but boy was I wrong. It's a bloody good game! I'm playing in the regular arcade mode, using only 1 kredit per go, and I'm having a blast. I especially enjoy the presentation. Lovely colours.

Spent a bus ride this morning thinking how's it possible I've known about the Andy Warhol, Spider-Man, Batman and Godzilla kameos since who knows when, yet never actually played the damn game. Oh well, now it feels like I have a new arcade action title to play in 2023. Is there a kore for this? :shifty: I really want to play this in its original form with all the kameos intact. And with a stick.

The PC Engine port's box art is calling my name. We'll see how long I can last before splurging. Speaking of ports... Realising how I've managed to avoid all of them as well is baffling:

Radiant Silvergun. I wanted to like it but couldn’t get into it.

I love the Switch version now though.

I still haven't warmed up to it. :lolno: It's absolutely spectacular, but I find it impossible to get to grips with all the weapon switching. Ikaruga is hard enough with one weapon and two colours to think about.

That one is actually amazing. But I must admit I've only played it on MAME it back in the day. Yet it was love at first sight for me, even in that mangled and emulated state.

I'm certain the game, and the completely different Famicon/NES release, would have benefitted by having a more Masters Of The Universe -like name. Master Of The Höly Ax, or something silly like that.

Took me a while to warm up to macross 2. Didnt like it at first but when i found out its a bit like Armed police gallop i really enjoyed it. I also didnt think too much of lightbringer at first but oh man what a genius game. The other one off top of my head was Armed Formation F. Once i worked out the mechanics i thought it was a super fun. Edward randy isnt bad either once u get used to it and l2p.

I still haven't warmed up to Bubble Bobble. It always feels like the input latency is super high, and the jumping/shooting just feel awkward. Same goes for Rainbow Islands.

I agree with you about Rainbow Islands. Bubble Bobble on PCB plays like a dream though.

Bullet Soul. Bought vanilla and Infinite Burst LE imports when they came out which was touching the tail end of my shumps burnout (Infinite Burst was after, bought on impulse), barely played them both through 2020 sold each for a pile of cash, then bought both digital like a year later for $9.99 and played them to death now love them.

I like it.

I think this weekend I'll go through some of the console games I've bought but haven't played much. You could say I was inspired by myself. Then again I could do the same with my Steam library but I'm not touching that!
