Have you seen Sega's new line of Astro's, pretty cool!

Post by Psykick »

Hehe well not quite, but it could have ;)
I finally got my project almost at an end and wanted to share some pics of the almost final product. Me and my always supporting buddy BeatmasterP need to make some final touches, so like always I appreciate your input to try to make it perfect, well almost. The art is done completely from scratch in asstight vectors, very rich in colour and as I mentioned before in a very pinky approach, ubercandy me thinks. All the stickers are professionaly printed, but I'm not very satisfied with the plexi between the speakers and the strip on top that says "flat square 29" This is all first run so we knew we could stumble on flaws and all. The guys that printed it used an adhesive that doesn't stick well on the inside of the plexi and it's letting loose. It's also too bright, although they used special material that is used for lightsigns that should keep it's contrast, but alas it's too bright and not full and rich in colour. So I need to find a better solution for those two, I don't know if I can print on some sort of stuff that doesn't stick to the back but can be attached on top of the plexiglas? Anyway I'll just let the pics do the talking and I must say that I'm really content with the overall result so far and in real life it's of course even nicer. Now to get my 360 and DC in there and start shooting stuff down

Btw a 2 player panel is already done but need to put in some sticks and buttons, but that one also rocks hard 8-)

Bit urban for my tastes but undeniably some cracking work there :)

You're right about the light area though. Ghetto solution for the astro part - shove some paper behind it? The flat square 29 should be frosted - perhaps printing onto frosted vinyl would work - and apply the adhesive second?

Sidearts good - some of the artwork isn't to my taste but pretty good - try putting some frosted acrylic or something opaque behind the marquee so the light doesn't wash-out the colours quite so much.

again, it's not quite to my taste, but the cab itself looks minty fresh, and the sega marquee looks excellent :D

Thnx for the supportive reactions guys and I was also thinking of different acrylic or putting black foil at the back or something. At least I'm going to reprint it with extra contrast so it looks less washed out in the first place and then some black foil to finish the job I hope. I'm sorry guys, but I'm just lovin' the pimp 8-) Btw the neon can be turned off with a switch ;)

Well those marquees are not so hard to come by, actually it's not a marquee, it's a neon light sign as they call it. You can get them on Ebay by giving "sega neon light sign" as a query or something similar. You'll then get a couple of hits I guess from Hong Kong, but you need to look carefull, because there is only one like this with the blue Sega logo, the others are completely transparant. Normally they hang upside down, so you need to open it, turn the acrylic upside down and then nicely attach it with some drilling in the metal case the back of your cab. Looks like this from the back, nice isn't it, just using some creative thoughts and voila hehe ;)

Here is some additional tech info on what I've done with the cab. I of course completely repainted the cab and also made it completely 220V for ease of use of course. Therefore I had to change the light, this is simple, then of course the original monitor is 110V, but as I Tri Synced it, it came with the auto voltage switching chassis, so that's also easy. I then took out the internals and completely rewired it and just put a simle Suzo/Happ PSU in there. For sound I used a creative 2.1 system again as I did with the Neo, only this time I kept the original Astro speakers, works a bloody treat and very nice bass, you can get those old creative 2.1 systems very cheapo and they also use 4ohm speakers, there a perfect match and an incredible sound!

I also replaced the original coin mechanism with a 50 Euro cent one and made it all work again. I had to take out the original metal case where also the coinbox is, for creating more space and comfort, but that gives a problem, because you can't easily attach the coin door back, as it's normally attached to that metal casing with screws and all. So I got two nice cut pieces of hardwood and attched the inside small frame to it, then I made holes to attach the door and made a slot to be able to lock it again, worked out pretty cool in the end.

A very simple but utterly cool feature is that I can switch the cab on and off by remote 8-) Just get those very cheap power control things that have like three devices that you can switch on or off and show off to your friends 8-) They look like this, plus you don't have to get behind or under the cab again ;)

Also don't forget guys what this cab used to look like when I first got my hands on it, just as a reference

Looking incredible! Art is great and the sign looks just right on the Astro.
I admire the craftmanship in this.
I know I should have kept my SEGA sign!

For those of you who didn't notice, the sideart is not completely correct, it's too long. Like I said this was the first run and we knew we would encounter some flaws, so now it´s corrected, but still I´m leaving them on, because I don´t really mind at the moment.

I if course need to mention the great artist that translated my thoughts perfectly on canvas, the great Jan Heijnen. The thing that is so utterly good about this guy is that he hadn´t seen a candy cab ever in his whole life (still hasn't) and all the Engrish on the cab are his compilations of stuuf from Engrish.com and of course the exisiting stuff. So lots of thnx to Jan for being a wonderfull guy to work with!! To check some of his other stuff see http://janheijnen.com/

Thnx man, well I'm still working on the final prints and acrylic, because I want them to be spot on. So when all is perfect I will make a first batch of 3 to 4 sets and will limit it to that in the beginning and from what it looks now it would be around 150 Euro for a full set. This will include sideart, 1 Control Panel overlay ( 2P or 1P ), the 2 lightsigns on top and the instruction card ( which is also being redone now to be more dark and rich in colour ) It will be mainly that price for material and the load of work put in there, if I was in it for the money I would have to make a whole bunch for it to be really profitible. But don't pin me down on the price yet, I'll have a final price as soon as I really have decided to sell them and when I have the exact cost for the whole set as a final product. Thnx ;)
