Taito Egret 2 restoration

Post by OlDirty »

Hi all

I got an Egret 2 few days ago which is in pretty good condition, but i wanna do a complete restoration anyway. So the target is to have an Egret 2 which looks 99% factory fresh.
Sorry for my english 8-)

Restoration video

This means:
- powdercoating the whole metal body, coinbox, doors,...
- maybe paint the plastic parts, i think buffing won't do the trick here to have it absolute flawless
- sanding all wooden parts
- cleaning the harnesses in a ultrasonic bath and renew all the cable ties
- joystick and buttons all new
- polish the marquee, screen and joystick panel
- tumble all screws and small metal parts
- chromium coating all bigger metal parts, maybe nickel coating
- renew all stickes (big cabinet stickers and all the smaller ones)

So i think that's it for the moment. Shouldn't be such a work comparing with a pinball restoration. The powdercoating and plastic painting will do professionals anyway

So here is how it looks like now:
Image

Image

thousands of paint chips
Image

doesn't look too bad, also from the inside
Image

So let's start with something i could do without taking the whole machine apart ;) . Would like to play first for a few days before i start the restoration.

polishing the marquee

it looked like this at the beginning. F*cking scratched and dirty
Image

Image

Image

So here are a few things i also use for car buffing. Flex Rotary Buffer with a Lake country wool pad, 3 M polish, claylube, claybar and stuff for sanding
Image

After cleaning the marquee with a normal all purpose cleaner i used a clay bar to remove also the tiniest dirt from the plastic.
Image

Here the front panel after cleaning befor polishing
Image

scratches everywhere
Image

Here's the backpanel with a big scratch. Really big scratches which you can feel with your fingernail won't buff out completely unless you sand with 2000 grit sandpaper for maybe a month :wtf:
Image

nasty stuff on the backpanel
Image

Started to sand with 2000 grit sandpaper the big scratches, then with 3000 sandpaper in 90° other direction. Don't worry it will buff out :awe:
Image

no way to get rid of such big marks. They are just too deep
Image

here is a 50/50 after the first hit with the woolpad. The scratched corner was covered with tape so a difference can be seen
Image

Image

After the woolpad i took a medium polish compound on my excenter buffing machine.
Always use a very soft micro fibre towel to remove polishing residue. Otherwise the plastic get scrached imediately again.
Image

And here the endresult

backpanel
Image

as i said, big scratches won't buff out. Here you see the big one
Image

but it looks pretty flawless comparing to the beginning
Image

Image

Image

frontpanel
also here the big mark could be just reduced
Image

yes it's a panel there :D
Image

polish the screen
next thing. Cleaning the screen. Just cleaned with normal window cleaner, then again with the claylube and claybar.
Image

this dirt still came of the monitor AFTER cleaning with a windowcleaner
Image

next step, polish with Z-12 Clear-View Glass Polish. Don't expect miracles from that. It doesn't polish scratches out, just makes the screen still cleaner. You can't polish glass so easily.
Image

just a few drops are enough for the whole screen
Image

So i hope it wasn't too boring. Will begin the "real" restoration in a few days, weeks,...

Very impressive work. The clay bar is very interesting, never heard anything about something like that before. Be very careful so you don't crack the monitor when you polish it. If heat builds up because you linger, you might do just that.

Monitor polish worked nicely. No damage ;) . But also nothing to show about the monitor polish. On a car window you just take the slightest grey "fog" of the window with this polish.

A clay bar you use before polishing a car, otherwise you could scratch the paint during polishing process with this small dirt grain.
here you see the process

I've two of these, both in battlescarred state. Fun but scruffy.

When are you free ?

That is some amount of work for the header! Mine are both brand new, but have picked up scores and marks from just being unwrapped !!

Great work. Can't see what you do with the rest. Mind - keep this thread pic heavy ! ;)

Absolutely astounding work on the marquee, Roger :awe: If you put in the same effort into the rest of the cabinet you're gonna need sunglasses looking at it once you're done 8-)

Nice thread. :D

Though be careful when polishing the monitor as it has a anti-static layer that you easily break-through.
(Layer is kinda purple in color and the real surface is kinda green.)

Next step is to reproduce ALL small stickers. For a graphic noob as me a pretty time consuming challange, because the tools are not easy to understand. But anyway, it has to be done.

During work with Adobe Illustrator
Image

test print looks pretty nice i think

If i'm finish (who knows when 8-) ) i'll upload all stickers as a PDF so everybody can have them. I can also upload the vector files if anybody needs to change something.

Looks good.

I read somewhere the colour of powdercoated parts could turn out different compared to plastics...

I'm not resting, but still do the sticker work. It takes ridiculous amount of time if you wanna make it properly and if you're a graphic noob as mee. 90% of the graphics i couldn't vectorize automaticly, so you have to set every tiny line and dots by hand. One sticker takes me about 3-4 hrs :wtf: . Would have a new Muchi Muchi Pork PCB waiting to be played, but stickers must go first

A few pics during work. Maximize the picture and set every little dot by hand with patience of a zen master :P
