Astro City - squealing sound on monitor

Post by aoiddr »

I had a Sega Astro City delivered yesterday and after some problems with not getting the monitor (MS8-29FSG) to turn on, I think I've gotten that fixed. Right now, what is happening is that once the cabinet is booted, there's this high-pitched whining/squealing sound coming from the monitor around the yoke/neckboard area. The picture seems to be okay, though. Any ideas what the sound is and how to fix it? It's really loud.

[update: the issue seems to have largely worked itself out. there's an occasional loud squeal, but it's mostly okay now.]

In my personal experience (I might be wrong)
this can be caused by the settings being off.
have you checked the colour cut offs etc?

Another thing to try is poke the neck board lightly (and carefully) in different spots (with it on)to see if a bit of pressure stops it?

It's the yoke. There must be some spots in windings that are not well covered with hot glue and so are free to resonate at certain frequencies (as is typical with coils).

Gently touch/press the windings to find the point that is vibrating and then put some hot glue on it. The coil wires are insulated so you don't get shocked when you touch them but if you are one of those people scared by monitors then wear rubber gloves.

Thanks for the help, guys. The issue did seem to be some of the copper coils on the lower left side.

I'm glad this question was asked when it was as I seem to have the same issue on an NNC monitor... The squeal starts almost instantly when te machine is switched on, but generally stops after a short while..

I'm going to try the fix suggested above. :) :thumbupright:

Before you go the hot glue route, try just pressing on the copper coils gently with a wood cooking spoon while the monitor is on to see if just nudging them a little helps stop it. If it's stopping after a short while, that might be all it takes.

Funny I found this thread. A few weeks back I rotated my monitor and it seemed to develop a buzzing sound hours later. Check it out...

Excuse the noise level, I had to crank it up in post to make it more noticeable on video. It's very noticeable in person, when it happens.

Now I haven't attempted applying any pressure to the coil, just the plastic housing around it. The noise occurred the entire time that night. The next morning, it was gone. I suspect the yoke may need to be reseated, but I'll need to read up on that before I attempt anything.

Interesting post. I have some issues with my monitor making noise but most advice has been to look at securing the flyback to make sure it isn't vibrating.
In my case, the outer metal casing around the flyback seemed to be the main culprit. I made a small cube out of milliput and wedged it between the casing the flyback. This seemed to work for sometime, but since moving, it has come back. Perhaps it was the yolk after all.

Hmm, I have this high pitched noise on one of my Astro's too. Will check it out, thanks.

Hah, you are not alone joeks, Sombetzki has it too (when rotated) and we took the cab apart trying to find what the cause of the problem was.
I guess i will need to visit him again soon with my hot glue gun.

Good to hear I guess :) Well, my monitor is vertical too, don't know if the high pitched noise will still be there when it's in horizontal position.
But it's not that bad, it's doesn't do it all the time and everything still works, just put the game volume a little louder :)
