The Penrhos Naomi units

Post by Parris »

The two sit down Naomi units Penrhos and I discussed in the sales thread have arrived and I got straight into working on my mates one and parting out the second one for spares. I am offering the frame of the second one to anyone in the Glasgow area who might be interested. If not, it will be sent to the skip - which personally I would hate, but I don't have the room to store the base. So, please someone take it! I hate waste!

This is the unit I am working on. See sales thread for the one I don't need!

This is after a good scrub, exchanging parts from one CP to a spare I purchased from Andy Geezer and a couple of new buttons. Gremlin Solutions always seems to take ages to fulfill an order, but hey, I don't think anyone's in any particular rush. The graphics suit the game in the cabinet (albeit Virtua Striker 2 ver. 2000) but that NOA 2003 must be replaced as it is really scratched to bits. It's on purely to get it up and running.

The cabinet was completely checked over and luckily I spotted a rather botched electrical job that Penrhos admits he missed, which I don't blame him for actually as whomever did it was trying to get away with it! At the rear of the transformer in the base is a small PCB with a fuse on it. That fuse was blown, but underneath it was a piece of wire wound around the fuse pegs to create the connection, then the fuse lain on top to prevent anyone for actually seeing it. Give it a few months of dust and there's no way you'd spot it at a glance! Seriously dodgy electrical work and could have blown the damned thing at the first spike!

Other than that, all good here!

As it is now...

I can't really do much more without spending more of my mates money. It needs a new monitor surround, but it is fine unless you are anal (like me) about these things, which he isn't. Cleaned completely inside out and re-wired. Some new buttons and joystick balls, but STILL waiting on Gremlin order... that's since mid December now.

Pleased with it, but clearly not yet in the same league as other refurbishments I have seen here, however I really need a new surround.

Will do mate, I probably ordered something that everyone else is after... white ball tops and buttons. Must be popular!

As for the the Universals. I agree. They are built really well and can take a lot of abuse. Just dust them down, stand them back upright and off they go. The Hummers of the arcade World.

The spare surround I sent might be better, use Novus or T-Cut and you might be able to remove the yellowing. Or fit the black one - its factory painted.

The courier managed somehow to smash them both lol - utterly unbelievable. Spares of SPARES get trashed! The packaging was fine, I think it took a 'dunt' somewhere en route.

I MIGHT be able to repair and respray the black one - the crack is up at the top right hand corner (whatever strike was pretty hard as the top hook metal part was actually shattered in two!)

That's two cabs I've shipped now where they have managed to break stuff thats hard to source. at this rate I'll have to start putting them in wooden crates.

This is why I don't sell white monitor surrounds anymore, shame as I could sell them all day long, just impossible to ship :(

Last one arrived damaged, When I get them they are on pallets, but no way people would want to pay pallet shipping!
Say hello to my little friend...

Andy, you should re-introduce the best packaging ever designed... tea chests! I remember us moving in the 1970's and tea chests full of our stuff and wood shavings! It sounds virtually Victorian now that I think about it.

Simple superglue bonds them together very well.

Yeah...

Bit humped for superglue to be honest - might have to try it though. Once filled and cracks sanded, sprayed it MIGHT look ok - FIngers crossed!

Well I ordered some of their purportedly "stock" items on the 3rd Jan and it's still not **** here. I phoned them again this afternoon and was told it would be "shipped out today". Not sure I really believe it to be honest.

I *understand* that they get their stock from Japan, and I *get* that things do go out of stock occasionally, but that's no excuse for the complete lack of notification or proper communication. Pretty poor really, think I might just order from Akishop in future...

Your refurb is looking pretty sweet though. Good spot on that fuse!

Love ordering from akishop - quick communications, decent speed of shipping, and you get a photo of your order before it's packed!
