tri-sync Egret 2

Post by ckong »

I might consider to buy an Egret 2 with a tri-sync monitor in it (Toshiba tube, Wei ya chassis). How is the picture quality of this setup, particularly for 15 Khz games?

quality varies,i have seen some perfect at 15k and then others with side compression
you need to get the seller to put on a jamma board and take a photo of the grid pattern test

@grantspain (and others):

could anybody please comment on this picture of the testgrid. I noticed that on the horizontal sides of the monitor (top and bottom) the blue and white lines don't align that well. Am I correct? Is that a problem? And if so: are there adjustment pots to get a better alignment? It also looks like the grid is a little bit 'tilted' (bottom left of the grid is ower than bottom right). so, what I am asking: does this monitor look like a monitor with a problem, or not?

Yes, I see it. But would it effect gameplay much? There is just a little compression.

However, I have a NAC and I did put up the same testgrid (from a MVS motherboard) on my cab and it is perfect. No compression, and the blue and white gridlines are 100% in alignment. That makes me believe that the quality of the picture in the tri-sync Egret 2 will be less good then the picture in my NAC. I am not speaking about colors, brightness etc, just symmetry and alignment. Am I correct about this assumption?

Hi,
A minor hijack if I may.

I have just had this done for my Excellena 2 - Toshiba tube and Wei Ya Chassis - and I have a stupid question.
With the tri-sync Wei-ya - is the picture interlaced or not when the video input is VGA?

I'm asking because I'm looking for a VGA box so I can run a Playstation 2 in there and some of the VGA boxes say you need to be careful of the interlacing thing.

Cheers

gz20tt, I have a WeiYa chassis on my Toshiba tube (Astro City) and the PS2 runs interlaced just fine on it. Keep in mind you probably won't be able to run the PS2 in 480p because it does sync-on-green for that video mode, and your chassis probably can't handle it. I've been using the Ultimarc adapter with no problems for 480i and 240p. (whether or not it is interlaced depends on what signal the console is sending).

Thanks for that dmauro,
I'm just being extra careful at this stage.
I have horrible nightmares of blowing the thing up when I switch it on.

Cheers

Hi,
one more thing on these chassis - what is the max resolution in VGA mode?
Do I need to force 640 x 480 on the PC when running MAME or can I bump that up?

I'm assuming that the 480i output from a Dreamcast VGA box or Playstation2 VGA box is within the capabilities of the Wei-Ya to handle.

There is probably a way to get a higher resolution in VGA with interlacing or something, but I'm not sure exactly. And yes, 480i is handled just fine by the Wei Ya chassis as it can handle 15KHz video.
