Blast City Restoration

Post by Jason »

Hello,

Haven't had time to post this info yet, but now is the time.

Backstory: got a blast city fishing cab busted up with no monitor from jonny here on the forums. The cab originally came from FL, USA and then from OH, USA and ended up here in Michigan.

First pics are the damaged CP....

Next pics are after the bondo repairs....

Then primed and painted (thanks dubs)

For the most part the cab body was in decent shape, only exception was that is is missing side art from the left side
Anyhow....
The monitors had came in!!!
we ordered 4 of these bad boys (3 for jonny, 1 for me)
They are Nieman Displays 27" Flat tube auto tri-sync monitors...

The monitor installed...

Bonus PIC!!! (other 3 installed in jonny's cabs)

Then got a repro panel....

Marquee was printed on Backlit media from Fed-ex/Kinkos for $35!!!!

Finished Product...

Looking great, good stuff!

Can I ask what you used to paint the CP surround??

Did you use spray cans?

Very nice indeed - how much does an empty, rework cab of this type cost?

Looking good. Hoping to get my second Blast up and running at some point in the near future.

I just came back from Michigan funnily enough - so much snow! Loved it!

Awesome work on the cabs. I have some repro Blast City side art, I can't remember if it's the left or right side, if it's the left then I might be able to help you out.

Was it any trouble installing those monitors? Did you have to make any bezel or frame modifications? Where'd you get them? How's the picture quality?

I also got a couple of those empty cabs from the guy in FL. Me and some other guys in FL cherry-picked the good ones and left the "crap" ones for you and Jonny :P So I'm amazed how well you two have restored these considering you had the worst of the bunch.

The other side is just a mirror image. so you can use Illustrator/photoshop to flip it.

Great work - i love it when people take something pretty crappy and spend the time making it lovely again, so much better than just buying an off-the-shelf mint cab.

Really impressed

Thanks Chris, also from what i have seen of your "cherry picked blast" these ones that me and jonny restored actually look better than yours :awe:.

As, for the side art I wanna get both sides ATM, was tring to get ahold of Maxchainsplendid here on the forums for some reprinted stuff.

Monitors: very good quality monitors IMO, not as awesome as an OG Nanao  . 31k is fantastic but the 15k is not as great, still good but like I said before not as good as OEM.

These monitors use Phillips Flat screen Tubes mounted with a Rodotron chassis, which Nieman takes time to configure before he ships these out.

As for the bezel I didnt modify it in anyway, there is a gap but i just went to Home Depot and found some black weather stripping that i stuck onto the inside of the bezel to fill the gap.

Installation: you will need 2 people for sure to do it. We had to remove the frame completely from the tube and replace it with the old, burnt, dead chassis monitors that came with these blast originally.
They fit pretty much exactly except for one hole that we had to drill into the frame. Then when we mounted it we had to drop the frame itself "behind" the monitor so the bezel would fill the gap for the most part once we had the tube in the cab.

I think jonny took some pic's of this process, which would explain it better.

Great work guys, Those cabs look great!

I have two of the Florida Blast City cabs and they are far from cherry but they don't have the heavy c/p damage of the first cab pictured. Great job fixing it thou, It looks real good.

MCS did repro some side art for my Blast City and it looks great. He does great work but said it was a pain in the **** and it would be a long time before he did it again.

What did you do about the holes in the front of the cabs where the security bar bolted to? I filled mine with panel bond (the stuff they glue corvettes together with) It looks good, I cant wait to paint it. :D

my only complaint with this (and i assume it's a joke kind of) but i payed for a fully working cab and received 3 dead/gooped chasis. like i said chris, i assume it was a joke but since the situation is what it is, this somewhat bothers me. was it mike? or another chris who held my cabs? i can't remember and i wonder if he's on AO now that killercabs is gone, anyways i'm super greatful that he picked up and held my cabs, i tried to hook him up with a populated panel for as cheap as i could for his trouble. by no means am i accusing anyone of anything, i'm just pointing out that it raises a red flag to me. anyway it works, jason and i have turned **** to gold. i couldn't be happier with the cabs they just took a while to get ship/shape.

You know what, they do, haha. I've only spent time cleaning up one of them. But yeah they were all basically in the same condition, nearly every panel surround was cracked, parts missing, dead monitors, etc. I just picked out whatever looked like it needed the least amount of work. I found one with a good surround and picked ones with all parts, working or not.
Sid put some serious work into his cabs, taking them apart and bringing them to a body shop, etc. you have to see it to believe. MCS gave me some free sideart so if you have trouble contacting him, you can have it for cheap.
The other side is just a mirror image. so you can use Illustrator/photoshop to flip it.
It's not quite that easy, you'd have to seperate the text from the background, but it could be done.

I think it was srarcade here that was holding your cabs? Definitely take up the matter with him but I'm sure he didn't switch anything out on you. I've talked to him in person on several occasions and he's an awesome guy, I'm sure he didn't mess with your machine. One was "gooped-but-working" right? Every Blast City Nanao I've ever seen, *working or not*, with the exception of one in literally mint condition, was gooped, so chances are even if it was sold working it would have the goop no matter what.
But yeah I'm completely joking with you, nobody did anything to intentionally sabotage your shipment, I just meant we got first pick. Like I was the last person to pick Cyberleads on the East Coast order and I ended up with something 1P, deep yellow, missing keys, and full of holes :P But such is life.

So you and Jason definitely deserve serious credit for turning what were probably the worst of the bunch into some amazing machines. Now I've gotta figure out to do with this Cyberlead, haha.

It's cool, and I apologize for sounding mean-spirited on the "cherry picking" hehe. Truth is everything had its good and bad points and Jon wouldn't let anyone swap parts around, so none of us rigged up some "all dead parts" machines for you or anything, I promise.

Ryan can be found in the monitor section, he'll be carrying a screwdriver and wearing a rubber glove :)

I have a MS9-29s in my Blast right now, but I think I'm going to pick up a cheap FD trinitron Wega and use a JROK to get a flat screen back. Does that make me a loser? I honestly think those look better than the MS9-29 in rgb*.
