SCSI CD-ROM for CPS3 Setup

Post by davewellington »

Hey guys
Over the last few weeks i've been putting together a CPS3 setup, grabbed a motherboard from a local operator, CD-ROM from local trade site, SCSI ribbon cable from a computer shop and molex to molex cable from work. The last piece, my 2nd Impact cartridge finally arrived today. Hurray!

When I boot up with a burned disc, I get a CD-ROM error. I figure the CD-ROM isn't setup correctly. Apparently I need a terminator? I've never really worked with SCSI before, can anyone give me a point in the right direction? Here's a picture of the back of the CD-ROM drive (minus ribbon and molex cables).

Looking up SCSI terminators in google doesn't bring up anything that appears very similar to the bottom row. Helpppppp :D

I am unsure what that row of pins is for, any terminator I have ever seen connects directly to the bus.

Example:

The Panasonic drives that come with the CPS3 kits from the factory have a jumper marked "terminator". I've also used other drives, such as Pioneer, which also had the terminator jumper, and they've worked fine.

I guess you could try jumping the first two pairs there (marked for factory use) in turn to see if one of those acts as a terminator jumper.

It's a Sanyo CRD-254V. I'm guessing it's going to need a cable terminator like what you suggested earlier ;_;

I've got a Yamaha SCSI CD-RW if you need to borrow it for testing. Heavy little ****, though.

Any help finishing this? I can't seem to find the remaining characters, I'm guessing the majority of them are kanji.

It was sold as working, I can only assume as I don't have a SCSI setup. Depending on what the error message says, I may be looking into getting another one :)

The only suggestion I would have is to try the other ID's. If that doesn't work I'd say the drive is either incompatible for some reason or knackered.

haven't quite checked every combination yet but i'll give it a looking over later. There's also the possibility i've burned the CD wrong (several times in a row), we'll see.

Still looking for help with the translation if anyone can finish it off.

Well I can tell you that the text is...

CD-ROMドライブが正しく接続されていません。
電源を切ってやり直して下さい。

..which says, "The CD-ROM drive is not properly connected. Please turn off the power."

The issue is almost certainly with your drive.

Here's what I gathered for my wiki on CPS-III, hope it helps:

SCSI CD-Rom jumper configuration

Capcom used Panasonic CR-504 CD-Rom units, but these can be replaced by any SCSI CD-ROM drive, you just need to set the jumpers to the following configuration:
Setting Value
SCSI ID: 1
Parity: On
Terminator: On
Power: On
