mame - 15khz or 24khz?

Post by chubsta »

As i have a dual rez monitor (not auto-switching tho) i was wondering if i would be better off running mame in 15khz or 24khz mode - anyone got any opinions on this?

15k. Most stuff in there is 15k, very little medium res.

Medium res should provide enough lines to run vertical games on a horizontal monitor without scaling, though.

Indeed, you have to compromise. But if you use a tool like Avres you will see that most vertikal games can be displayed without scaling om a horizontal monitor. And you have to use the correct settings in the mame core options (DDRAW, no hardware stretch, switch resolutions to fit). almost all of the vertikal games will then be displayed correctly. There are some games, like 1941 and Cave games amongst others, who still have to be stretched. My opinion is that for these games you can better use D3D (to be set in the individual game options), which will stretch the game.

One more thing, I use Mame32plus which has a few extra options above the standard mame32 version (for instance high score save support which isn't any longer supported in the latest 'official' mame32 versions). Another plus is the extra options in the UI_configure menu (key_code tAB). Very handy for D3D games is the 'video options' in the UI_configure. If you select that you get another option menu with an option for Pixel Aspect (*.*). If you choose that option (which will be stored in the game cfg file) Mame32plus will 'scale' the D3D game to the proper pixel aspect.
