Windy monitor-Help please
Hi everyone,
I bought a windy last weekend from a friend and it has a WG9200 monitor in it. The monitor doesn't fit real good. The back of the tube (the curved part ) hits the reinforcements on the cab and won't let the monitor sit flat. Has anyone run into this problem before and whats the best fix? Is there a monitor that fits this cab better? My only idea is to grind or cut out the place where the monitor makes contact with the cab but I hate to do it since the Windy is in such nice shape. Any ideas or advice would a big help.
Thanks, Phil

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Yes, with a Billabs/Wei-Ya monitor (BL27CA1Q), which looks very similar to a Wells Gardner D9200. I had to cut some plastic all over the surrounding area. The main problem came with the monitor mounted horizontal. There was a clearance issue with the fat wire around the tube and the plastic in front of the speakers (which acts to direct the sound, however slight). I would have had to shave a good chunk of this speaker molding off to get things sitting flush horizontal. I play mostly vertically oriented games so I didn't go through with that step.
Here's a little write up I did about it way-back-when:

btw, I'd be interested in seeing pics of your setup if you get a chance.

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Thats exactly the problem I am having. I want to set it up horizontal but like you said it's going to require a lot of cutting. Do you know of a monitor that would fit without having to cut up my windy?
Thanks for the help, Phil

No, the original frame has been removed from the WG9200 so I will need to make a custom bracket to hold the chassis.

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
why didn't you mount the chassis were it was originally ? you only have to drill a few holes
can't say that mounting a Pentranic on the Windy's frame was that much of an issue really besides the corner mounts being spaced differently

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Hey guys,
I was real busy last night and didn't have time to post any pics and with the arcade auction in Orlando tommorow I will be tied up most of the day but I have basicly the same problem Oxtsu had. If I want to use a Wg9200 I am going to have to cut out some of the cab reinforcements like he did. I want to hori mount the monitor so all of my mods will be to the side reinforcements, I just hate to cut my Windy.
Is there a monitor that would work without cutting up my cab?
Thanks, Phil

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Phil, why the apprehension? The parts you will have to cut will not affect the key structures, are hidden, and will not interfere with anything else in the future.
You're going to have to shave the bezel as well, if you want to run with it, which is a far more precise task. This part I can understand being apprehensive about, since going back to a curved CRT wouldn't mesh (in other words, 'no going back').
Another idea I had but didn't implement: fabricating some block spacers, aprox 20mm, to go between the monitor mounts and the square mounting sections on the cab (eg. where it bolts up). If you're running without a frame you probably wouldn't have to cut anything that way. My reasoning though was to make the new flat CRT flush with the highest point (dead center) on the previously curved bezel.
I'm sure there are other monitors that will fit without cutting/mods, but I don't know anyone who's tried anything else (Mr.Meg?), and therefore can confirm a particular model. Definitely not any flat or near flat CRT. It would have to be an older curved screen monitor (the tubes having a steeper incline in the back would give more clearance). Something closer to original spec.

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
i've fitted replacement monitors/tubes to the Windy's yes, however we had the frames which we re-used so life was alot easier
Windy 1 you can fit a Nanao MS8/9 (same curve, same mounting points on the CRT) Windy II would need either a Nanao MS29-30/MS29-31 or a Sanwa 29E31S due to mounts and curve being different to the MS8/MS9

Cool. One thing -- you seem to be confusing 'frames' with the Konami mounting brackets. If you recall the og Windy monitor doesn't have a frame basket. When we talk of 'frames' here we mean the one on the replacement flat CRT. In other words, mounting it up isn't the issue (since you use the og brackets).Mr-Megalo wrote:i've fitted replacement monitors/tubes to the Windy's yes, however we had the frames which we re-used so life was alot easier
Basically you can take it or leave it, but without a frame there will be less cutting required. I chose to keep it (see link above for pics) since the thought of running without one ever again was too scary at the time. heh

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Yeah, I'm just being stupid about cutting the cab but I'm over that now and will fit the monitor this week. The WG9200
has a curved tube but I haven't had a chance to check it to see how well it fits the monitor.

Re: Windy monitor-Help please
Hey Guys,
Ok I finally got up the guts and cut my cab. I only had to take off a strip on each side reinforcement about 6 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches wide above the speaker mounts(speaker mounts are still fully intact). The monitor fits great! tommorow I will totaly disasemble the cab and clean the cab inside and out! I will try to post some pics when I am done.
I also just bought a Uni at the auction and I got a great deal, uni with virtual tennis fully working for $325.00 usd. What do you guys think?
Phil

Ok, sorry it took so long to post a pic but I have been real busy. On each side reinforcement I cut a strip about 1 1/2 inches wide. The monitor fits great. I am rewiring the cab now and will post some pics when I mount the monitor.

Watching you win that Naomi Uni at the auction was pretty epic. You owe me one if any of your leads come throughI also just bought a Uni at the auction and I got a great deal, uni with virtual tennis fully working for $325.00 usd. What do you guys think?

Lucky for you I picked up that $240 Blast City right before it, hehe. Turns out it has a working bill acceptor, normally those get removed since they're worth a lot to operators.
