What with me finally being able to put some decent money away for a rainy day shortly, once I've done enough of that I'm seriously considering buying a car for the first time.

Bearing in mind I live 15 minutes walk away from work, in the centre of town, have no dependents nor need of much transport space - any recommendations?

I like small, fast, reliable motors. Kinda leaning towards a Clio V6 or Golf R32 - the Clio is winning because it's mid-engined. That or a Lotus or VX220 should be within my eventual price range (buying outright).

Clio V6

Looks great, handles like a 2 ton lump of ****. French Build Quality is The panels are really thin. Honestly you are much better of with the 172, 182 sport or Cup. It’s quicker, cheaper & drives much better.

Golf R32

Assuming it’s the Mk 4, then it’s fantastic looking, built like a tank & dropping in price Only drawbacks are you need to pay top dollah to get one that’s not had the **** ripped out of it. It ‘needs’ the ECU remapped as it’s underpowered as standard (£300 & you are sorted) If you buy one, make sure it has the leather recaros.

Lotus or VX220

The best handling, best looking of them all. If you go for a lotus make sure it has the Toyota engine. Either Turbo or NA VX220 are good cars.

I’ve been considering a Lotus Exige S for the last 12 months. I see far too many broken down (audi as well ) I'm a big fan of RWD cars which is the only thing that puts me off the Lotus.

Yeah, the VX220 Turbo is damn tempting. Sub 5 second 0-60, thank you very much The NA not so appealling, still nice though.

The Golf would definitely be the Mk4, the Mk5 is ugly as sin. I can't stand the looks of a regular Mk4, funnily enough.

The V6 appeals simply because it's such a silly car

Take a test drive in the V6. I did a few years back & it's stupidly heavy & not as fast as it should be I like the looks, but it lacks something (speed maybe)

The NA VX220 has much stiffer suspension for some reason, so it's a good drive. The Turbo is the one I would go for, but it's a fair few bucks more.

The other option is something pimpin like a porche cayene (the jeep) ugly as sin, fast & luxurious somehting cheap with character, Honda CRX, E30 BMW 325i sport, Pug 205 gti, Mk 1 Golf Gti, Corrado VR6........

There are tons of great cars in the £3-5k bracket. Millions in the <£3k from the 80-90s

Small and fast? Get a supercharged Toyota MR2 Roadster (Mk3). Not as pretty as the Mk2 (or as powerful), but easy to find in goof nick and fairly cheap at the mo. All are convertible too.

Mind you, for 6k or so you could probably get a high mileage Porsche Boxster...

I've never looked at the MK3 MR2. I sat in one in Tokyo before they were released & it was the smallest car I've ever sat it.

You can get a late mk2 (2000) MR2 for <£5,000. The red top is 200bhp & the late turbos can be 250+ bhp without breaking sweat.

After market = yes.

The Mk3 was brutally underpowered from stock. Bit of a hairdressers car actually, so you might want to consider a Mk2 rev 3 (there's a nice 1998 one earlier in this thread actually!).

All that said, you could ignore the "small" bit and go for a Mitsubishi FTO. My brother has one (Mivec i think) and it goes like stink. Automatic is the norm though there (booo).

Scratch "cheap". Never once mentioned that The Exige S is completely and utterly out of any price range I'd be prepared to spend though!

Performance wise - top end doesn't interest me. After getting away with foot-on-the-floor motorway driving for a few years, and narrowly avoiding a ban by the nearest of margins, I rarely go above the speed limit except when overtaking. How quickly it gets there is far more fun.

The M6 is top of my hit list at the mo. £28-32k though so it'll be another 2-3 years before I can buy one

Heh, it'd be unlikely to be a BMW. Much as the higher performance models are tasty motors, the stigma of the indicators being directly attached to the steering wheel (you virtually never see a BMW driver indicate, and if they do it's always at the exact point they start turning. No offence intended to any of you lot, I'm sure you're all great ) puts me off.

The M Coupe is probably the only decent looking one, though.
