Now my monitor's settled in to a decent picture, I agree it's better turned off.

And the twenty odd years weren't enough for it to "settle in" ? :awe:

It was blurry for ages and very gradually got sharper. Much like a CRT always does on power-on but greatly drawn out. I guess it was just the cold of sea travel and being without power for ages. Previously I'd only briefly tested it and then left it off for another three weeks.

Just turned it on again now to check and it's settled into a nice sharp picture in less than a minute.

Monitor took a good 30 minutes to warm up just now after being switched off for only 20 hours. When it first came on it was barely visible through the thick virtual Vaseline. Took maybe 10 minutes for the pixels to even become distinguishable. The picture also took some time to become stable, and there was an occasional, noisier than usual, electrical sizzle.

Never had a CRT take this long to warm up. All previous CRT cabs I've had have been upstairs, but this one's downstairs (a foot from an external wall). It's not cold inside - I'm in shorts and t-shirt - but it is outside, so condensation's likely.

Anything I should worry about?

Do you have an HV probe?

You don't need a HV probe.

I posted [this] thread asking for help the first time I discharged a tube which really helped.

Maybe not the best idea to do it on NYE though after a few Sherrys :whoopsie:

Ditto, I pulled one off :fastlove: and was a bit panic stricken, but had no issues. Good Luck (said in the tone used in Taken)

I always thought tempting suicide with high voltages was something other people did.

You'll prob be unimpressed with the anti climax of it all when you dis-charge the tube, I know I was :problem:

How to learn that MS8s don't discharge (or do so slowly) in one easy step.

Hurts, but only for a split second. Note I still took precautions - one arm only, removed watch and jewellery...
