Hmmm maybe I should change it. I'm trying to talk myself out of the bother to be honest.

I guess it is personal preference. Have you had it long?
There is no Apple store near me, so I have to keep doing Express Replacements. If you don't have Apple Care, this costs £26 a pop :(

I've had it since it came out, so what's that - about two Months?

I love the screen, I only really notice the difference in colour temp when I compare a white or grey image right next to my iphone 4 screen. I thought that maybe the iphone was actually overly cold/bright and everyone was getting into a fuss over nothing - like when people compare a plasma with an lcd at the shop - the plasma is more accurate, but the cold brightness of the LCD wins customers over.

I dunno though, it's not like this ipad's going to get used for DTP. Better visibility in the light would be better. I might ring and enquire about changing it.

All you have to do is go online, enter the serial, request a repair, they'll send out a box, you put it in, phone UPS, they collect it and you get a new on for free shortly after.

Yeah, ok, easy then, thanks. I'll probably do it. I swapped a 27 inch imac once and it was surprisingly easy.

Thinking of upgrading my iMac if the new one offers anything special.

I can't wait for the new imacs. I downgraded to an old 2008 imac a while ago and have held off going back to a 27 as new ones have been expected for the last few Months.

I'll take this moment for a macsibate  and point out that with a student discount and the ssd I added, I lost pretty much nothing by selling a year old imac. I think I could have profited if I didn't use royal mail to post it insured (£90! :palm: ).

What do people think of the possibility of a 4k screen on the next imac?

Ivy Bridge a definite. Hopefully the 4k screen too, but it may cost a lot to manufacture screens bigger than 17inch yet
I have been waiting 3 years for a new and worthwhile laptop upgrade. Really hoping for an Air-like Macbook Pro with Retina display at WWDC next month myself :awe:

2560 x 1440 is enough right now tbh. Most competitors are 1080p but more importantly most content is. For example I have a hard time finding images online big enough to crop for dot by dot wallpaper. Your average online JPG is going to look tiny on a retina iMac.

One thing I like about the ipad 3 screen, is that scaling is a lot more forgiving at super high resolution. A 480 image scaled up to a 960 looks **** but as the pixels get less visible, a 1080 image scaled up to a finer screen isn't so bad at all.

I'd love a 4k screen. With OS X Hidpi, Apple plans to keep everything looking like a pixel doubled 1080p desktop to keep icons and text at a reasonable size at default. There would be a lot of scaling (especially in browsers), but there can be fine detail where available - Exactly like the ipad. I like this approach. There's a lot of criticism about things like 'screen real estate', but the way I see it, the real estate would still available for detail in high res photos, graphics and film editing, it'd just keep standard screen elements (that don't take up much room anyway) at a realistic size. If 4k doesn't come on the next imacs, it'll surely be on next year's.

By the time I finish my smilies, they'll be obsolete.

I remember Apple talking about having resolution-independent text and UI rendering that would generate size based on inches rather than pixels. That would be really cool; I wonder what happened to that. HiDPI sounds like a stopgap for that technology.

I think they just realised that a vector based ui ends up pretty messy. Vectors take more processing power and memory, and produce a less precise result when going down to icon sizes and below. Alternatively, raster scaling is always a bit rough, especially, when going down to small sizes. Nothing really beats a simple, pixel precise bitmap for a desktop UI.

Not to mention Mac OS and windows are still based on a 72dpi design.

I don't think resolution independence will work (to a pretty standard at least) unless OS interfaces go through a dramatic change in the way we use them - and not just the menus and controls of the OS but in all software that runs on it. And by the time that happens, dpi limitation will be a non issue anyway.

...I reckons.

I've just seen the current (October 2011) version of the MacBook Pro 15" i7 4GB Ram for £1200 (£1549 on the mac store) would you guys by that or see what's announced on June 11th?

Do you think the new MacBook Pro will be released next month?

Wait until June. Even if you buy that model it will be cheaper when the new one arrives.

I agree. Usually with computers - there's always newer models around the corner, you could wait forever etc. But macs are expensive and their price doesn't drop on par with deterioration. The best time to buy them is on release of new models. I would wait for the next ones, even if they take six months to arrive. ...and especially with the retina rumours - the 13/15 inch laptops are most likely next in line.

But that's just me, it depends how easily you can afford it I suppose.

Also I put a link a few pages back for the HE discount stores. 15% off, free 3 year warranty, a free itunes voucher and possibly a free printer. The freebies usually begin around June, so even more reason to wait.

http://forum.arcadeotaku.com/viewtopic. ... nt#p251616"

P.S. I just realised with my advice, I completely disregarded your discount. Sorry, but that's because I always use the HE store direct from apple, and no other discount ever comes close.
