Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
I finally caved this morning

I've read all the arguments against having one but the temptation's been gnawing away at me for ages. I've spent the day with it now and think it's excellent.

I can't imagine myself with one, but they do look nice.
Even if you took away the computer, I bet you'd have to spend far more to buy another watch with the same quality of metal work.

Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
looking for some advice on what to buy or look at as I need to upgrade computer/laptop and dont really follow what the latest tech and os developments are. im looking at getting a desktop and possibly a cheap laptop for essay and correspondence stuff on the go. desktop primarily for art stuff with entertainment as a second (no gaming). I was looking at the new 27" imacs (don't really want another windows system) is it worth the upgrade to the 4.0ghz i7? or should I be looking at something else entirely. budget is £1500-2000 plus student discount so max ~2300
any suggestions?

Yep. If I can find a courier that'll insure it.

I phoned TNT for a quote and they did it for about £70 iirc. Couldn't find anything close to that online. The online deals only offer standard insurance which doesn't cover glass.

Thanks. I'll give them a call.
2.9 GHz i5
16 GB RAM
768 GB SSD (That'll bump the price somewhat).

I take it that's the proprietary SSD, nothing in the hard drive bay?SuperPang wrote:Thanks. I'll give them a call.

Anyone tried to run MAME OS X in El Capitan? I'm reluctant to upgrade till I know that it still works.

Welp, it seems that MAME OS X does not run in El Capitan. The roms run, with sound, but no picture.
I did play around a bit with SDL MAME, but I just can't figure out how to add scanlines, and also half my ROMS no longer work.
Think I need to start up a MAME on Mac thread in the Emu section!

I recently got a mid 2012 Macbook from good old Red5.
Apple stock this exact same model largely unchanged still, with a mark-up that does not reflect that it is 3 year old hardware.
However, this machine has a decent processor and the RAM and HDD are still user upgradable ... well I am not sure about the RAM in 'new' versions because Apple likes to solder this in now!

Anyway, once received, I swapped out the HDD in the MacBook for an SSD and it has much improved the usability. Once you get used to an SSD there is no going back!
Shame the most of the Macs these days are a pain to work on, this Macbook was pretty simple to swap it over, just some screws. I have owned Mac Minis for years and they are always a challenge to upgrade because you have to completely dismantle them. The ones from 2014+ are especially annoying.

Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
Guys odd question here....
Just got a Western Digital 8TB My Book for work but they've sent the bloody thing with a 2 pin (fixed) ac adaptor.
It's a china branded Ktec AC Adaptor. But I think it gets supplied with the U.S. models.
Input 100-240v ~ 50/60Hz, 0.8A
Output 12V 3.0A
Do I need to buy another adaptor from fleabay or can i just plug this into a 2pin shaver plug and it will work ok?

For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!

A cheap travel adapter off ebay will do it.
