Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
Well that's it, if you use it a lot. Like I say, the cost over the standard iMac is quite small imo so if it makes the most noticable computer component by far that bit nicer then it's a worthwhile upgrade for the cost - especially if you're already splashing out on Mac prices.
And it will make family/amateur photos look better, even if they are family/amateur.
All screens are going to go that way eventually and then we'll think today's LCDs look ****.
Ironically most of what I do (or want to do) on a desktop is low res pixel art. I have quite a specific desire for clean scaling at unusual ppi ratios.

The unwritten rule is never to get first generation Apple hardware. I think I will wait it out for a bit and see if any issues are reported before committing to a purchase

Too true!! Had the screen replaced after only 8 months in my current iMac due to screen marks appearing in random places, turned out to be a manufacturing issue with most of the earlier models...cRacKh0rN wrote:The unwritten rule is never to get first generation Apple hardware. That's it Mark, blotches or shadows is what they looked like. Could'nt use the screen for **** after that as your eye was immediately drawn to it, even in midtone areas!markedkiller78 wrote:Was that the "shadow" or something else Joe?

I might wait for the next gen retina to be honest, mainly because I can't justify the expense atm.
It is often good advice to be wary of first gen stuff, but in the case of imacs the second generaton of the last three redesigns have all been very underwhelming. Software tweaks help any early problems and faulty hardware can (hopefully) be changed.

Yeah they didn't kick up too much of a fuss about replacing the screen on mine joe (did have to wait a week for a decision though!) and hopefully apple won't shaft the early adopters of this screen by releasing a noticeably quicker skylark/radeon version next year.pubjoe wrote:I might wait for the next gen retina to be honest, mainly because I can't justify the expense atm.

If that was ever a secret it must have been Apple's worst kept one.

Resolution is one of those things that you never want to go backwards with. It's easy to stay at the same level, but you always appreciate more and find a use for it.
With that said, 5K on a 14-15" monitor is the level I'd consider "done". Talking a resolution whereby you need to be just a few inches from the screen to see the pixels.
We've got a way to go yet.

Like anything digital, you need absurdly high detail to please an analogue receptor. Even a 14" 5k screen could be demonstrated to be inadequate with a certain source such as an extremely fine repeat pattern.
Though without getting as silly as that, around 300dpi is "good enough" for most material. 5k iMacs are 218dpi, so almost "good enough". The next jump would seem pretty insignificant anyway.

Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
Technological deveropments!
pubjoe - the way I work is fairly animated, I don't sit at a consistent distance from the screen(s), it varies between about 30cm and a metre depending on what I'm doing. As well as physical zoom I'll use scaling as well depending on the application, time of day, etc. It's a small bugbear of mine that Windows 8.1 won't let me adjust scaling below 100% (1920x1080 on a 22" display from a metre, I'd like the text smaller so I can cram more in, yet it's impossible). I'd love a couple of 300dpi+ decent size screens.
In Android news, my Zerolemon Nexus 5 battery/case turned up. Whilst it's a real ugly thing (looks like a 90s PDA) it's nice to have heft to my phone again, it's much easier to handle than a slim thing. Will see how well the battery helps.

My neighbour has had all the iPhones but still prefers the chunkier 4 than the new slimer models.

I agree with Pete's neighbour. The glass front and back was genius. It could have been thinner (newer models only really trimmed on the glass) but they favoured fancy materials. It looks great and was surprisingly rugged.

Cools, I'm just the same regarding screen distance and will scrutinise up close. The 'viewing distance' thing is fine for television (1080p satisfies me) because I watch it passively. I use a computer screen very differently.
I use most open windows when betting - for which 2560 pixels is still pretty tight. I'm not fussed about image quality in this usage but zooming out below 100% on individual browser windows can be too messy to be useful. I'm hoping that type of scaling improves dramatically, which would be very helpful but it's not my main reason for wanting this screen - that'd be my love, which is graphics.
I really need to test one. I was pretty happy when I tried a retina mbp but that was only a quick try. Mac OS scaling options are "Mum friendly" by default, though are configurable. I like that I can use an instantly refinable screen zoom that's free of AA. Photoshop is also clean ...Annoyingly all the cheap, slim and almost-as-good Photoshop alternatives seem to scale badly.

Amazon Android App Store has £100 worth of apps for free today. Worth sticking all of them in your account while the offer is on. There's some decent games at least.

Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
I'm getting sick and tired of my slow as **** Xperia J that I just got back in April. I want a new phone without **** clutter. I don't want a huge phone either. Any recommendations? I know nothing about what's out there so please halp. I'm not a fan of Apple products, but that's not stopping you guys. I only have experience from Android and Symbian phones. So... plz?
I still miss my HTC Chacha. The full keyboard was so nice.
