Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
It'll be a small fortune not just because of the screen but the grunt needed to push that many pixels. I'd love one but can't afford it this year. It's going to make a lot of average-res content look a bit pants too.

Only the same parts that would be in a top-end iMac anyway, they're still limited to a single GPU, but yeah you'd really want to max it. Current imacs work well enough with three 1440p screens and most stuff (I'm interested in) is already scalable. I do have a limit on price so I may well have to pass.

Single GPU on a 5k screen will be pretty **** for gaming you would think.

I just wish that I had eyesight capable of appreciating 5K...

Re: The great macdebate (now with roids)
Personally, on a film or game I doubt I'd really notice - not on any TV size I'm likely to buy. A desktop computer's different though as studying small detail has real purpose. The current imac can display roughly a 4 megapixel photo, 5k would mean a 15 megapixel photo. I've always chased resolution since I first plotted a blocky 8x8 sprite together on spectrum basic and I've overspent on high res (for the time) PC monitors several times. So to me the jump is quite exciting, and likely the last computer in standard form that I'm going to get anywhere near this excited about.
You can probably already muster something together with a 4k LCD and carefully selected software but it'd be a royal pain. Getting technology in a ready to use package (even the glitchy 1st releases) demonstrates the strength of integration imo.

1080p is good enough for me at the moment. I really covet the new nVidia g-sync monitors, but the cheapest is £300

I've been using 2560 x 1600 for years now and don't / won't go back.Rossyra wrote:1080p is good enough for me at the moment. I really covet the new nVidia g-sync monitors, but the cheapest is £300
1080p is plenty for video content, but swhen you sit inches rather than feet away, but resolution is so much better no for work and play

I'm not convinced I need or want 4k a 2560*1440 g-sync would be a nice compramise, but again going from 30" to 27/28" would be a step back for me.

I'm going off G-Sync the more I read. All the current panels are TN, probably will be for a while. Seems like quite a big premium for the technology especially when you compare prices to what's around in the way of IPS panels.

I've heard the Asus PG278Q ROG Swift has some of the best colours from a TN perspective but unfortunately still has the viewing angle issues...would love to have assetto corsa or even project cars running at this resolution, hell any recent PC title really!Rossyra wrote:I'm going off G-Sync the more I read. What I would love is something that let's me play my PC at an awesome res plus great upscaling for 360, ps3, xbone and ps4....

For gods sake, its a carton box - not the holy grail!

The dell ips monitors (the £800+ ones) apparently have scalng, how good it is I don't know. All the monitors I've looked at, inc my own, are dvi-d only.joeblade wrote:I've heard the Asus PG278Q ROG Swift has some of the best colours from a TN perspective but unfortunately still has the viewing angle issues...would love to have assetto corsa or even project cars running at this resolution, hell any recent PC title really!Rossyra wrote:I'm going off G-Sync the more I read. I could really do with a 2560x1440 / 1600 that has HDMI in and can handle 1080p
Maybe 4k will scale better as it's 4xFHD?
There are 4k gsync monitors appearing now.

Even the 4K GSync screens are TN though, way too much money for a TN imo.

I've ordered a Dell UltraSharp U2414H, £200 delivered from Aria. Never used them before but they courier with DPD.
Scan was a tenner more.
I'm not ready for anything bigger yet

Samsung U28D590 28" 4K is not a bad entry into 4k although reports with xbone seem to be a mixed bag....some say the picture looks great, other's say the picture is quite soft.Maybe 4k will scale better as it's 4xFHD?
Tbh im not entirely convinced yet on g-sync...people have been complaining about compatibility & optimisation issues....early days yet though!
It's gonna be tricky for punters as time goes on if they want to have a high res PC setup and an xbone through one monitor...

Great low lag monitor that one ross...nice!I've ordered a Dell UltraSharp U2414H

Kind of but not quite. It cheats with a pentile matrix and subpixel spread, meaning a single pixel isn't a full pixel.

RGBG. They count RG as one pixel and BG as another pixel. The image is converted. They've been doing it for years. It's a nice effect for smoothness, just as a shadow mask is on CRTs. It's a bit of a cheat to call it 560ppi though.
