Sega Rally/Club Kart Conversion

Post by Andypc »

I recently picked one half of a Sega Rally Twin in need of lots of care and attention. It had no monitor or game boards, so was perfect for what I am hoping to do. I also managed to get an Initial D seat with it. I wanted a driving cabinet that I could use to run the Model 2 Emulator in, (i.e.Daytona, Sega Rally) as well as PS2/3 Games (i.e. Outrun 2, GTI Club +, GT5). I am planning to install a logitech G25 steering wheel with full force feedback. The cab was in a similar condition to the one recently restored, but with no monitor, or game boards + the side artwork was all ripped.

Most of the metal work needs to be sand blasted and powder coated.
Monitor 029.jpg
took the whole thing apart and all the metal work (apart from the frame) including the base has been taken to be professionally sand blasted and powder coated :D

I decided to give the frame a fresh coat of paint to get it ready for when I get the rest of the metalwork back.
Monitor 041.jpg
The plastic sides needed a lot of preparation i.e. filling and sanding before painting, but I am really happy with the end result :D

A huge thanks must go to Andygeezer for helping me test the isolation transformer and power supply and sorting out the wiring I needed \o \o
I then cleaned it all up and transferred it to a new board.

This is the monitor that only goes full screen when holding the H-size and V-size pots!

The Initial D seat cleaned up a treat and I am hoping to get some Gullbox Speakers for the rear sound.
Monitor 046.jpg
The rear plastic looked like new after cleaning. I also started to apply the new artwork to the the side plastics :D

i would just swap those pots that are causing problems, they will have a number like 101 or 402-that translates to 100ohms and 4000(4kohms)
looking good btw

Looking forward to the end result as I love these cabs :D

Out of interest what was the price for the powder coating? I've just found a place close to me that can do metal parts for pretty cheap. Sadly the oven reaches 275 degrees and therefore no chance of being able to coat plastics / fibreglass without risk of warping.

I got four quotes for the sand blasting and powder coating ranging from £200 - £300 for 11 part including the whole base unit. I ended up going to the nearest company that are doing it all for £240.

Are you gonna strip the wheel out of its case and permanently mount it into the cab frame? Or leave it loose, but attached?

I'm hoping to permanently mount the G25 into the cab frame. The original sega steering wheel and parts are in a bad way and very unlikely to work again any time soon.

I'm still waiting to get the metalwork back from being sand blasted and powder coated. I have been busy sanding and respaying all the washers. I've also had a couple of new bits arrive for the cab

A brand new Sanwa PFX Monitor direct form Sega :awe:

Plus a new TOF-1010 Monitor surround and PFX mounting bushes :D

How much did a brand new monitor direct from Sega set you back, if you don't mind me asking? I've been looking at the one in my Naomi UR and thinking "you truly are **** aren't you". Would be a good present to myself before heading to Uni and being skint for 4 years.

Sega were doing them for £495 +vat, but have now sold all of that batch. The price does change depending how much they pay to get them in. You also need a new monitor surround as the PFX's are pure flat.
