MiSTer setups

Post by o1s1n »

Get a MiSTercade, lash it into one of your cabs and you'll see how great it truly is!

Worth noting that the USB port placement is a little different with these clones over the original DE10, you just need to use a USB cable to connect the MiSTer USB port with the MiSTercade rather than one of those USB bridge thingies.

Everytime I want to get into this stuff I always stop myself because it seems like such a **** to me on price, models always getting updated, and it always seems like something better is just around the corner to wait for, one of the reasons I got out of gaming PC stuff. The last time I owned one of these types of things was a namco/williams multi game retro vert board back in the day when those were hot, played it for like 6 months and one of the paper caps on it blew up, never thought about any of that again. But this thing is supposed to be $99? So what exactly do you need all in to hook this to a Jamma cab? My current cab is wired for MVS 4 button and CPS2 kicks, does it "just work?"

more than $99 dollars thats for sure !! :awe: I think just the total mega pack with ram io and whatever the other boards are runs to circa 160-170 and add shipping .And then for jamma there is the interface which is another it chunk on change !but it is fairly straight forward after that !

havent done any testing really to know if its worth it over any other platform ,groovemame ,jamma pi or the likes but the ease of setup was a nice surprise* im sure there is stuff i need to tweak and i havent actually played any game on it yet ! not sure what controller will work with it until i get a jamma interface :lolno:

@o1s1n yeah waiting on payday left overs before picking up any more ! :D

One thing I love about it is how bare bones the OSD is. It almost looks like some sort of dev software.

You turn on your cab, there's some snow static with a very basic OSD, pick a game and then you're in. About as close as you can get to just having the PCB in there without having a PCB in there.

If you do get a MiSTercade, I'd recommend setting up some favourites lists too so you don't just end up doom scrolling through massive romsets.

I have my favourites done by genre rather than system. So the Shmup genre for example will be a list of games including arcade Shmups, Megadrive shmups, PS1 and Saturn shmups etc.

If you're into Lightgun games you really should check out this PS1 SNAC adapter for it too. Work perfectly with Gcon games. Just plug it into the SNAC port on the MiSTer and away you go. Gcon games on your cabinet. Also works with Gcon patched games like Die Hard Trilogy.

: yeah 1st thing I did was set a few favorites, but maybe i did it wrong as it wouldnt launch them from there and it was getting late so just left it ,think there was only about 700 arcade games to scroll through anyway !! so maybe I haven't turned on everything either.

Did not know about those snack adapter  :thumbupright:

Does anyone sell an all in one unit with teh romz, preconfigured? The last time I did anything like this was modding PSP units and setting up the memorysticks, I have no patience for that stuff now and know I would **** it up lmao

The guy who makes the MiSTercade just released a V2 model, there are some all in one units he has that has the MiSTercade V2 and the Nano DE10 board & RAM module. So you can buy it with all the hardware stuff done and ready to plug into a JAMMA harness.

I'd say you'd still have to set up the SD card but it might be worth sending him an email about it. Super easy to do either way.

Be nice to see a front end rather than Teletext though.

Much rather the Teletext myself! front ends make things look more like emulation machines IMO.

I love the DE-10 Nano / MiSTercade combo. Most the arcade games are cycle accurate as you would hope with an fpga.
I've got the 486 core (ao486_MiSTer) running DOS Prince of Persia which is launched (fully configured with arcade joystick controls) from the main menu! The PSX core is also great.
There is a tool to make favourites from the main menu so you don't have to wade through pages of games.

Side by side, most my PCBs are identical, with the only obvious differences being that the sound is crisper on the mister for obvious reasons.
Some games are not quite perfect: Guwange and Esp.Ra.De have a couple of graphical glitches (mainly when starting the game). I think the dev has stopped working on the core. Dodonpachi is fine though.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend getting one in your cab with the MiSTercade,

There is a script you can install called update_all that just grabs all the core updates as they come out. You can run this from the scripts menu once you have downloaded it to the SD card.

Thanks, so $600 to get into the game, too rich for my blood these days, I guess I could sell the boards I have left and easily buy this but would never own another legit PCB again, will think it over

It's about $150 to get into the game. The extra expense is optional.

MISTer was a no-brainer proposition when it was near $100 for a DE10 Nano.

A cheap setup example being a DE10 with 32MB SDRAM and a cheap USB splitter. That was just about $130. Preferably add another $20 for a 128MB SDRAM module for full arcade compatibility. People happily stop there with a fantastic HDMI device.

And now we're in luck, because the clones have returned MISTer to that price point.

You can also go cheap for Jamma connectivity, it's nothing new. It's essentially the same as connecting a PC. You can use one of the many jpac style devices that have been around forever. If you're unsatisfied with the typical 1 frame of input lag then it costs a few dollars for the best joystick encoders you need - Pi Picos with GP2040 installed.

The reason people end up with a $600 setup, myself included, is simply because MISTer is awesome, but please don't let it be a barrier. We've just spent out to put it in a nice neat Jamma sandwich of PCBs. Invzim and Porkchop Express sell the best slices of bread but the filling is still the same.

It's well worth playing with a basic HDMI setup to test it out, then decide if you want to connect to CRT or put in a cab, and you can spend as little or as much as you like to achieve that.

Okay, so the $100 thingie is what I could run off HDMI to an OLED and use a USB arcade stick with teh romz on SD? Got that. Damn so the rest of the Jamma kit package makes the price balloon like crazy, but that would be the end goal. I almost got a jpac once for mame but seemed like a heap of confusion. I guess I'll have to go for this package to do it right, might wait it out even more to see if there are any price drops with more clones.

It can do but it really doesn't have to. You could do it for $50 or $300. No one playing on the cab would ever know. It's better as a later expense and it's a separate decision. It's a similar type of splurge to a Japanese arcade stool or the pricey Airlink step-downs that we like in the UK.

Same with consolising for a CRT. You could use a $15 cable adapter with a $10 USB hub and that's all you need, or there are options to spend $200 that do the same thing slightly more conveniently and look much nicer doing it. Like all hobbies it's just one of those optional big expenses for the last few percent of quality.

I'm on board, I just need to wrap my head around what the best line would be. I do think the Japanese stool thing is dumb (Lol no offense) I have an Ikea... but I'm not good these days at putting together things with wires and harnesses. If I can stick this in an Astro City and hookup my CPS2 kick I'd go for it even at the cheapest level. I don't think I have any use for playing on the OLED, I can do that from my PC but rarely do.

One question about the quality, does it more or less play CPS2/CPS1 games as well as that Darksoft thing? I thought about modding my last CPS2 system for that once but decided against it because of the cost. Can mister ever do CPS3 or Cave SH3 stuff or is that just PC tier still?

This is all from research rather than personal experience… but I understand it’s basically indistinguishable from real hardware as far at least as CPS1, CPS2 and M92 hardware is concerned.

There are YouTube comparisons, and the difference is negligible. A frame or two over the space of ten minutes.

As for using Japanese stools with cabs… when I first got into the hobby obviously I simply had to have a legit Taito stool!! Do I use it ever? Nope. I use my PC chair that at its lowest height is perfect for a candy cab.
