That said, half these 'special' edition consoles look like ****! I remember buying a Hashin Tigers GameCube years ago (I only bought it because it was the cheapest new Japanese console I could find with a Gameboy Player, at the time) - and it was probably the ugliest console I'd ever seen

That's one ugly Dreamcast!

A lot of people made fun of the Panasonic Q, but I thought that looked lovely
To be fair, I actually always liked the Q too That was a bit of a special case, as it actually featured much more premium design/materials. As opposed to just a fugly colour scheme (and maybe some extra logos)
Still don't get the appeal of PVMs. Got half a dozen consumer CRTs of 14-21inch here - Panasonics, Sony, B&Os - all with what I'd consider near-perfect picture and geometry across various display technologies, all silent in operation (unless you're 12), none looking like it's just fallen from a 1980s news network van. Is it an American thing? A Reddit thing? *shrugs*
Only two of mine are allowed in the house but yeah, I don't get the telly-mountain rooms either. I like Videodrome as much as the next man but I wouldn't want to live in it.

Consumer crts will only get popular when the price rises, pvm/bvm are basically only for shelfqueens who like to look at shelves full of boxprotectors of unplayed ****

Any CRT with RGB looks great, but professional CRTs are popular in America because their typical telly didn't accept RGB.
Take RGB out of the equation and a low end PVM still has better geometry and much more calibration control. You have to go to the higher end models to notice a decent image improvement - which is debatable for games.
They are overpriced now though.
Then again I'd be more than happy to spend a couple of hundred or more on a CRT. Just a nice bonus that we don't have to.
I'm not bothered about their décor. I'm not trying to impress tea party guests.
