Not 100% on this but It can do something similar with USB so that it’s not actually ‘USB’. No polling, no drivers, a serial connection but just using the USB port.
Similar to JVS then which is RS-485 using the USB interface.
You can get a bunch of console joypad adapters and they connect directly to the virtual CPU as long as the FPGA is simulating that console. Original console light guns work this way.
Mouser are OOS of DE-10 nanos, they have a back order due **** end of July, digikey still have at the time of writing 189.
I keep reading about chip shortages, maybe I'm putting 2+2 and getting 10 but if you're in the market for one of these it might be wise to not wait about too long.

I bought the last one yesterday
Usualy i get their items on the next day, but this time i got an email informing that due to Covid 19 item will only ship Friday
I ordered my DE10 from digikey, and although it said it was on back order it turned up about a week later
Thanks to @pubjoe for helping with initial setup, and @invzim for his cool little JVS-PAC2 (and config guide) that makes it a nicely supported plug 'n' play device in the Windy 2

Well they've mitigated this quite nicely by significantly bumping the price up
Ouch. Same for me, it's a pretty hefty price rise in a mater of a couple of weeks.
I've had a chance to do a bit more playing and it's going nicely. I dug out a Capcom I/O and happy to confirm that it works nicely via the JVS-PAC2 for 3p/4p action
Question - anybody know a way of re configuring buttons for player 3? Below pic shows that the 3player Final Fight works fine, but Cadillacs & Dinosaurs player 3 is unresponsive. I'm probably missing something simple, but I can't find a way of configuring any player other that player 1

By default Mister cores require one input device per player. jPac firmware has been updated to be recognised as two joypads instead of one keyboard, so it now complies with this - for two players. I don't know if the jvs-Pac does it quite the same way.
Tbh I was surprised that Final Fight Annie worked on your three-way setup. Until you got it going I assumed that you would need to connect Player 3 as a third input device by however means (pad hack/iPac/DaemonBite-arduino-thingy).
Maybe FFA has a special workaround built in. Dunno, but when I played around with it I was a bit surprised to be able to control all players with one keyboard while I was under the impression this isn't usually the norm on arcade cores (hence the need for the jPac 2-device firmware update).

I think this is a known issue and has been reported over on Jotego's github, having a quick read it looks like he has not squashed this bug yet, have a look here:
