Gief's BVM envy thread

Post by markedkiller78 »

Get your pics out for the lads :fastlove:

So after grailgate, where the now infamous NEC XM29 came to my attention, I ended up looking into PVMs and BVMs with more interest. I appreciate some may not like this guys videos, but I found them to be really informative and he easily explains what makes PVM and BVMs so much better than any other CRT out there. He ditched his X29 pretty much the straight after he saw a PVM

Here are a few terrible pictures of my BVM doing 480p better than I ever imagined it could look

What size bvm is that ? You can see from your **** pivs that it does look great.

Can't see me ever getting one tbh , due to prices and seemingly low availability here

They really do look awesome. I've never seen a BVM in operation, but I have some PVMs and was blown away the first time I hooked up my pc engine..!

 that's pure porn though ;)

I've always fancied one but I don't have any retro consoles any more sadly. You can fit a cab in the space of a PVM and a couple of consoles so that happened instead.

I have a Trinitron and an AV7000 on a test bench of sorts. Maybe if one popped up really locally...

I wouldn't say "massively overrated" when speaking of arcade enthusiasts etc. There's always a small group to which small details matter.

spmbx wrote:I think they are massively overrated. Good? Sure, although that's only the case if you have one that hasn't clocked god knows how many hours at a studio. The difference with consumer trinitrons is there, but it's not nearly enough to warrant the trouble (and lately insane price) of getting one. That's basically also Fagins' conclusion at the end of his bvm-2010p youtube video. If it's cheap and local get it, else don't bother.

edit: video
Sometimes it's easier to look at technical performance and price as two separate things.

A good CRT TV is still a great solution, whether a BVM is worth the hassle and price is totally subjective

BVM and PVMs are amazing.

Loving the pics! But seeing them in the flesh knocks your socks off.

I have the D20F1, I believe it's the last of the 4:3 BVMs. It shares the same manual as the D24E1 and D32E1. All 3 are multi format.

Aye, I think it went 20F (480), A20F (multi) then D20F (multi) and done

32 year old (1985) Sony PVM-1371QM

I've got a second with a minty casing, but it died very shortly after arrival for reasons I have yet to investigate.
