I'm obviously going to say Wonderboy :D
But like others above have recommended.. Pang, Bubble Bobble, Puzzle Bobble, Snow Bros series (and Joe & Mac Returns), Rainbow Islands are good ones for simple platforming fun.
Beware of New Zealand Story - it's harder than electrified acid coated nails!
Spinmaster / Top Hunter on MVS are also good colourful fun. Don't forget Bomberman too ;)
PacMan or PacMania are great on vertical, as is Bomb Jack.

My kids (6 & 4) enjoy Ikaruga (they can just hold fire then move the stick around) Virtua Tennis 2 and Cosmic Smash.
Super Mario Brother on the NES is also a favourite.

SFII is quite good if they are playing each other, as they basically just mash buttons (a bit like my technique :awe:) and the game generally times out (so I don't end up with the live version when one of them looses)
Snakes: They're like bits of rope, only angrier.

Anyone tried locking their kid inside a Star Wars Battle Pod with a drink and some crisps? Maybe a bucket too. I'd try that.

Nice to see this thread alive !

My oldest kid (4) is actually pretty fond of Deathsmiles, but my Bubble Memories and Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder are the biggest hits with he kids visiting our house.

My eldest (soon to be four) likes SSFIVAE and USFIV. He favours the player 2 side here, as he likes the purple buttons.
