Just a quick update. Been busy with real life, but have been able to prep and start priming the main unit:
Image Image
Have sanded back to the steel where there was rust, and straightened all the dinks. Just need to finish priming and get the top coat on. All the panels and doors are done.
I decided to peel off the side art. I wasn't going to, but it'll paint much better without it.... and although I've no experience in reproducing art, this is such a simple geometric pattern, I don't think it'll be too expensive or difficult for a pro to redraw and print:

I'm definitely at the point in the restore where the cabinet looks like utter ****, I've spent a wad of cash, and I'm worrying if it'll ever get done / look good

I've removed the base:
Image
... drilled the rivets on the steel corners to remove them, sanded the rust away + started priming it. I'll put a nice, new grey-silver top coat on it:
Image
I've also started to peel off the side art from the monitor section so I can clean and give it a good, fresh spray. The art was glued on with the most evil stuff I've ever encountered. Took 20 mins and blistered thumb to get to this point. Still got the other side to do:
Image
..... I need to push past this bit quickly so I start feeling good about it again!

Thanks - I wont be giving up :D
I'm feeling chipper and managed to finish priming the main unit and the base today:
Image
This U-POL primer is really good: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0096JWL12/. It goes on lovely. I'll try and get the top coat on the main unit this week some time. This is the RAL902 I've been buying: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00CXM0UMQ/. To be honest, it's working out quite expensive (probably 5 cans by the time i've finished). A mass-produced colour - like appliance white - would have been much cheaper... or at least I should have got a tonne of 902 mixed up and borrowed a compressor.
I finally managed to shift the old side art (one side only so far):
Image
My fingers really hurt. Got the last of the crap off with alcohol. I'm not even thinking about removing the other one at the moment - need the blisters to go down first . I'll be rubbing the monitor housing down, filling all the little dinks, and putting a top coat on it.

Other things I'm doing....
I like the look of Hammerite Smooth Silver for the base and ll pick a couple of cans of that up.
I've chased up the reproduction pcb door and hope to have that in a week or 2.
I've found a guy in France who has previously drawn and printed Swing art, so have put an order in.
I've decided to stop keeping track of the amount I'm spending... Nearly there.

Base is finished. Finished it with hammerite smooth silver and put the polished metal corners back on with pop rivets. I masked the Sega serial number off before starting. This looks sweet - really happy with the way this turned out. Factory fresh:
Imagebefore:Image
I've also finished painting the rest of it:
Image Image Image
If i were starting again, I would have gone for plain white. The grey-white of RAL9002 is nice, but I've spent too much on cans.
The missing PCB panel will be with me tomorrow - I'll drill a hole for the lock, spray it up and then start putting it all back together. I've been told the side art is in the post - really looking forward to getting that.

Wow, I am really stoked by this. I have mine on the way, and needs restauration too. Could your share the file for the overlay and header? What did you make them from? I think I need a new CPO and the entire header thing.
Congrats!

Thanks for the kind words guys. It's really close now. I would love to see another Swing being restored! Best of luck with it.

You can get the artwork you need from these 2 threads 8-) :
Credit to these guys (esp. ooyk) on Neo Arcadia for scanning and drawing the repro overlay and making it public: http://www.neo-arcadia.com/forum/viewto ... &start=225
And nicoken on Neo Arcadia for doing the same with the header: http://www.neo-arcadia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53228
The CP overlay I got on gloss, laminated vinyl. The header is a window sticker vinyl.

Today I managed to get the PCB door back. Painted it, added the lock.. and couldn't resist popping a few of the bits together:

DPD have temporarily (I hope) lost the custom printed side art  . Will give it a few days, crossing my fingers, else will have to order some more. urrgggghhh.

Looks good already. I can't wait to see it completed (as I'm sure you can't either!)

It's nice to see an unusual cab get a restore of this standard. Good work 8-)

After failing to be loaded on the delivery van 3 times and being 'lost' for 2 days, today was the final straw and I drove to the dpd depot and collected the parcel with the side art.
Image
It's not 100% (wasn't sold that way), but it's good. I'll be getting all soapy and putting this on the cab this week some time.
dpd are a shower of ****, but I'm happy!

Mine is already home, not sure if sharing my pics here or start a new thread. Unluckily the coinbox lock has no key, will need to force my way in. I´m a bit scared.
BTW
1-Can you share a pic of the latch that goes in the door above the coinbox? Mine doesn´t seem to fit, and not sure if it is bent or they just changed it.
2- The screws that hold the front glass. Is there any washer to protect the glass from the frame or screw? Mine doesnt have it and seem a good idea, also will keep the white frame hidden
3- Whats the original screen for this cab? I can´t see any brand on the chasis so not sure if they swapped it. The tube frame has Daytona handwritten in it by hand so I guess it is definitely not the original but is it the same?

My Swing didn't come with locks on the front doors, so just got some generic replacements. Can get some pics this week.
I bought 3 of these, keyed alike. I did have to mess with the tongues a little bit to make them fit. They are 19mm wide, 16mm across the flats. I think i got 20mm length:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Camlock-Locke ... hash=item0
For the glass screws I used these washers (had to cut them down a little):
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-FLEXIBLE-WA ... 5d39720051
The monitor in mine is an MS8-26SG with mitsubishi tube.

@zipper Few questions.

How was the CP case? Mine is quite damaged, the areas with holes to attach the CP have been broken and redone, so very feeble.

The CP has also very weird mounting plates. What kind of joysticks is the Swing supposed to mount?

Where did you get the design for the side arts? Think I´m going to replace mine.

About painting the cab, I can see it with the metal parts, but wouldn´t it be better to polish the fiber parts?

How did you go with the speakers´grey areas? Mine has some words carved, probably some arcade golden era memory.

When you have time, could you make some pics to the nuts and bolts? Mine came disassembles and I can make them match, special the ones that attach the CP, the plexy next to the coin slot or the back doors...

I really want to make my cab look as good as yours!
