Sold an FX Darth Vader lightsaber on auction ebay 99p start, went for a silly high amount due to the hype, zero feeback bloke won it paid via paypal then exchanged details, He phoned me up and seemed a nice enough chap. He initially wanted to pick it up as he was only 70 miles up the road which I said was fine but I'd have to refund his paypal payment and he could then pay cash on collection to avoid paypal item not received scam.

He then phoned later and said he won't be coming to collect as the roads were jammed due to a bridge being out, ok fair enough these things happen and I hadn't refunded his account yet, We agreed to proceed as normal and I would post the item, He then asked could I send it through the post office as he's had trouble not being in and the courier services have no pickup points for the most part, I said ok but it will cost more postage than I'd advertised (15 quid). I sent the parcel using Parcelfarce with enhanced compensation for damage/loss of 400 pounds, ended up costing £23.78 which I footed as the item sold for a nice amount and he seemed nice enough.

He received the box had clearly been dinged but the saber hadn't been damaged and was still fully working although he did say the light source had a darker patch on the saber when lit, I told him this is normal and a trait of these FX sabers and pointed him to this site showing him that they all have it >http://www.fx-sabers.com/forum/index.php?topic=778.0,


I can appreciate that some of the value in a collectible is in the packaging which I told him and would do a partial refund for 50 pounds so he could buy a new box on ebay should one turn up (there was one on sale during my auction) I told him I couldn't take the item back without damage to the actual saber as I wouldn't be able to put in a claim due to the box having a ding. Woke up this morning to 3 emails from him Here's the best one:

"Good morning I understand so the best you can do is give me 50 back which is very good of you under the Circumstances and I will see if I can get a new box might be able to given time thx Andy you have my pay pal details"

The next email was
"Hello Andy have been reading on eBay and I
Would like a full refund as the item is not what it should be I
Know its just the box which is now damaged but I did not buy it that way and its not my responsibility as a buyer . What do you wish to do about this matter as will be speaking to eBay now about this matter hope we can sort this out cheers Nathan"

Needless to say he then opened a returns claim and now he's saying the saber has dark spots.
So I contacted ebay to see where I stood in all this and informed them that he had already agreed to a partial refund and that the actual item had not been damaged just the box which I couldn't put in a claim for, They looked at his emails and told me to offer the partial refund as agreed and if he declines it to put in an appeal on the 17th, Needless to say he declined it

So what do you guys think ? Do you think I should just accept the return or wait to see what ebay decides ? I know that normally ebay decides in the favor of the buyer but in this case they can see from the emails that prior to him putting in the returns request he was happy to take a partial refund.

Win some lose some. Have him send it back fully insured and tracked, refund him when it arrives.

If I was buying and didn't want the faff of a partial refund and sourcing a box, this is what I would want the seller to do.

FWIW any time there's a hint of a problem *immediately* open a case with eBay so all the comms can be tracked through there, you may have got him to accept a partial straight away by doing this.

Well offered him a full refund if he sends it back tracked and insured, He wants me to pay the return postage which I said I wouldn't as the actual item isn't damaged(by his own admission)and he just wants to return the item which isn't covered by ebay rules of returns.
So I told him that's fine if you want to roll the dice and see what way ebay decide Makes little odds to me as I accepted a return anyway.

It's been a while since I've bothered to dispute over an Ebay purchase, but this one cost me 70 EUR. I had to cut open the poster tube to get the poster out because it wouldn't come out otherwise.

Contact the seller! If they start been a Cynthia open a return on eBay and only contact them through the case. Don't email them outside eBay even if they try other ways of contact.

Such a shame to see the poster in that condition after paying for a perfect one. I would be gutted!!

It looks like the same poster but in worse condition. Look at the diagonal crease top left of Haggars head and the edge wear left of Budo's arm

Hmm, you're probably right. I wonder what the hell happened since the poster's edges are worn from all over and the tear was already visible inside the tube. The photo used for the auction must've been pretty old then.

eBay requires you to sort it out with the seller first and they will step in if there isn't a satisfactory conclusion. Use the eBay messaging system so they can see your message exchanges.

eBay will side with the buyer in this case, having seen the info.

The only problem here is if eBay requires the buyer to pay the return postage? Look it up. Because for sure I would not want to keep a poster that is in that condition no matter what the discount.
