I had a pair of B&W 600 series at my parents that have somehow vanished now that I want them back. They weren't all that great, but suddenly I feel the urge to replace them from eBay because they are gone

Don't do it. Get some 800 series instead. Those are some proper speakers. B&W had a model change recently and there should be some good deals out there.

whee, the mid drivers on my £900 special edition floorstanders have eaten themselves from the inside out at the braids since they were last used. 
I've had nothing but bad luck with these speakers.

Maybe it's your monitor? They do look slightly goldish (or brass) on my monitor.

I'm very happy with the sound of my vinyl and if it aint broke.... Anyway, if I was going to try a new phono stage I think you can guess what it'd be
