The replacement of some of the chips did clear up the background crackling sound but the money shot was the "ROM1" which made the most difference. So keep all your dead CPS1 boards, brilliant for parts.

CPS1 with crackling and random sound **FIXED**
I was testing my Final Fight pcb last night and was noticing crackling and random sound output from the PCB. The board looked clean and scratch free so the first thing I looked into was the sound ROM section of the board. I took note where the YAMAHA sound chip branches into and systematically remove and replace the socketted chips from that section.
The replacement of some of the chips did clear up the background crackling sound but the money shot was the "ROM1" which made the most difference. So keep all your dead CPS1 boards, brilliant for parts.
