As for me and MAME, it's always been a real pain to get a decent MAME set up, as I've been on OSX since about 2003.
I used to use Macmame, which was ok, then found out that I couldn't use that in os's after Snowy Leopard as it wasn't universal.
I then migrated to MAME OSX and save as to the recent CAVE stuff (which I do want to get running) I have got most of the stuff I want running.
A while back I found that MAME OSX won't run on Lion+, so started up SDLMAME using a nice little automator short cut to boot into it.
Problem is that now all my ROMs won't run and I am back at square one -when I do finally upgrade to Mavericks that is. I think I'm gonna hold back as long as possible only SL, not just because of that, but also because I just really like Snow Leopard.
I guess when I finally upgrade my Mac Mini I'll just have to go the bootcamp route as it seems like its easier to get a decent MAME set up in Windows.
But whilst I have good set up with my emu, I still really like to play my Neo Geo home console, it just 'feels' better and I like the original kit.
In my cab I have one of those 450 in 1 jamma mini PC's and I think its great but I seem to spend as much time swapping between games and then getting bored. I did recently start playing the heck out of Alpha 3 - like I forgot how fun the game was.
So ... despite that I have that game on the 450 in my cab, I went out and ... picked up a CPS2 board of Zero3 - am dead chuffed with it!
It prompted me to fix the fan in my CPS2 - which now sounds really good. I also started a project on upgrading a DC Stick to use on my Sigma with the kick harness (I'm about half way done).
So ... after all that blurb ...
I think that MAME is great I get a chance to experience all these great games, and the ones I really, really like I then track down on PCB.
Owning the PCB of a game that you love feels pretty good and its worth the cost - at least to me.
I guess its like, if someone downloads tons of MP3's then becomes a big fan of some obscure band who happen to bring out some Ltd edition vinyl and you're all over it.
Something like that - alternatively we are all mugs!
@Pete. Hah probably not! I remember playing on that cab at PlayExpo last year for over 20minutes without even realising it was on Mame. The only reason I found out was when the Mame config menu came up when you did a certain combination of inputs, but as soon as you and Ralph fixed it it was fine again. I would suggest upgrading to GroovyMame just to make that much more perfect
There was a nice video on YT featuring of the AO stand at play expo but it has been removed (uploader closed his account) luckily I had a back-up & edited out all the other stuff before uploading it to my own account:
To me I guess it's kind of like comparing backed up media to physical Blu-Rays and DVDs. I have a massive collection of downloaded media and it is all kind of the same although compressed. As and when time and finances allow I do replace my downloaded media with the real physical things.
Mame serves its purpose but for the purists and the true gamers I suppose nothing compares to knowing the real thing is sat inside your cabinet

One the biggest "true gamers" here is ex-mosquieto and he uses mame.
.
That does not prove anything, certain games are unplayable on mame. And the fact about real thing is absolutely true. I wouldn't believe it, IF I did not compare
