Also, as you say, even with their bread and butter games, they try to do something different. Shigero Miyamoto's been getting pressured for a new F-Zero and he recently said in an interview that he's not interested as he can think of little new direction it can go in other than HD graphics. While I'd like to see a new F-Zero, his attitude is admirably stubborn. He's an artist and he wants to be inspired by what he does.

The nsmb series is fan service. I know that's got repetitive now, but that's an exception that proves the rule imo. Mario games had changed so much with each release that fans craved more of some old gameplay.

Even in a basic platformer, the level of control is second to none. One button can be used in such a variety of ways by timing it with Mario's animated nuances. It's not like games where x is a context sensitive scripted action button, but rather, Mario's jump is physically and satisfyingly affected by many variables of his position. It's hard to explain, but the elements of pure gameplay are so rich and deep, yet also very subtle. You begin to master this without noticing and after a while, almost instinctively pull off ridiculous feats. Nintendo still, after all these years, focus immensely on this. It's not innovation that screams at you, but changes they make in control are very noticeable during gameplay.

Contrast to something like 'The Last of Us'. It looks fantastic, great art and story borrowed from a great film. The visuals are amazing and set pieces dramatic. But do you think they've focused much on how it actually feels to control your character? Climbing and dodging are animation scripts, there's a huge detachment in control. A lot of these games mostly have you in a dull jog-around mode, you soak in the omgraphics scenery until something exciting switches you into a sort of 'Dragon's Lair' style scene where you watch a little animation and press a button or two (which are highlighted on screen for your convenience). The action on screen looks exciting, but there's rarely any gameplay innovation in the true meaning of the word "gameplay".

Nintendo aren't storytellers. They unashamedly just say 'Monster kidnaps princess' and focus on the playability. You don't see glimpses of storyline being revealed, you see glimpses of interesting looking areas that you know you'll be able to dive in and explore and manipulate when you get there.

...

There's nothing wrong with wanting to immerse yourself in a great story with incredibly realistic graphics. Different ways of looking at games. Personally, I find myself rarely willing to put in the time for that sort of thing anymore.
You hit the nail right on the head! This is exactly what I was thinking the other day but you explained it way better than I can. Nintendo games, and good Japanese made games in general, have huge variables and subtleties in the control that I feel are not appreciated and are often overlooked by the mainstream. I was looking at the IGN 'the last of us' review and while it looks amazing, and I even contemplated buying it, I just know I will end up hating it like I did the new Tom Braider reboot. While it seems to be getting 10/10 everywhere I can just tell I'll be annoyed if I played it. You're right when you say when you jump on games like these you're just triggering an animation script with very little control, timing or influence of what's happening on screen. Sure, jumps and QTE look epic but most people can't seem how automatic it all is. I feel like I don't deserve what's happening onscreen. I want a hard punishing game that demands strict timing and skill to progress and be punished accordingly for sloppy play, but most games these days seem to going the opposite direction.. Nice looking but too easy and dumbed down. They're feel more of an experience than a real videogame.

As they can do already in the form of online passes, this generation.

Most probably won't. The ones that do, I usually don't play anyway. But we'll wait and see. All I know is it can't be as draconian as Microsuck.

Arkham Asylum on the hardest difficulty... Ninja Gaiden (although QTE nonsense)... Hard games do come out that respond precisely to your controls but they're very rare. A no damage clear on one of these is ridiculously hard, but this is 50/50 mastery of the controls and due to having to remember 2-3 hours of a game.

Taken from IGN:
To many gamers, Sony’s PlayStation 4 won E3 2013 decisively, with a competitive price, no used games restrictions, no online connection requirement, and a slew of games. And it’s apparently showing in the strong pre-order numbers for the console.

In a conversation with the Wall Street Journal, such a response was seemingly unexpected, and as such, Sony has increased its sales forecast as a result.

WTF is that video **** I have just seen. Everything, and I mean everything, in that shows how **** home consoles have gone. Who are they marketing it to? People who are in employment, have a personal life and play games as a hobby will never use any of this bloated guff.

Yes it's trying to be funny, has cheesy music and we're supposed to be all like "that dude sucks, I'm going to be so much better bro". I don't know who is in charge of marketing at sony, but they deserve to be fired for that irritating crap.

My main point is that it's showcasing a load of utter **** social integration **** that I couldn't give a flying **** about. It's just another nail in the coffin for next gen, another indicator that it's not about the gameplay anymore.

Come on everyone bashing new consoles for the games all being 3rd or 1st person shooters but nintendo have knocked the same **** out for about 20 years. In the good old sega/nintendo era every game was a platform or shooter, and as for the social stuff you don't have to use it.

I happen to think the ps4 has the potential to go down as one of the best consoles of all time. Plus time can help you forget ,do you remember some of the old console promotions :lolno:
