Nintendo M82 Restoration Project

Post by k1ngarth3r »

Image M82
Serial Number: 17037
Original Owner: Dixons
Location: Tunbridge Wells, England

On the 18th February 2013 I received a broken Nintendo M82 from “handfulofbits”. He had been originally given the unit by a friend who rescued it from a Dixons Store located in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

The unit has a few faults, the first being the metal casing which is attached to the control panel unit and holds the plastic marquee in place as been ripped off the unit and now missing.

This damage was most likely cause by somebody trying to steal the games from the machine while located at Dixons.

The second fault happened while “Handfulofbits” was testing the unit for me. The system had been stored safely in his loft for many years but when it came to test the unit for me the PSU blew after just 5 minutes of gameplay.

The final issues are just cosmetic, the switch to allow the time limit to be changed at the back of the system is no longer present!

There is a lot of sticky tape residue from holding the front panel in place. And there is scratching to the front of the unit.

Hopefully with a bit of luck, I can turn this expensive paperweight into a fully working and restored machine!

Summary of work required

1. Clean the unit inside out, removing at dirt and grim
2. Replace/Repair damage PSU
3. Replace missing front Control Panel

Today I opened up the unit, all the screws around the unit are rusted and will need replacing.

Looking inside the unit I notice the rotary switch hanging loose and disconnected from the motherboard (the actual switch had snapped off though but at least the wiring there (should be easy to buy a replacement)

The whole units full of dirt, the PSU especially

After 10 seconds of looking I found the damage to the PSU

There are just two components which had "blown up" that will need replacing.

I will need to remove the PSU, clean it up so I can look for damaged traces etc and then figure out what they 2 components are so I can replace them.

Ok, well i've removed the PSU from the system and gave it a basic clean (I don't have any PCB cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to hand).

I've checked the traces under the board and these look great

I'm now low on natural light but managed to take photographs of the board with a light help from the flash on the camera.

Excellent stuff! Look forward to keeping an eye on your restoration.

Our local Dixons used to have one of these too - It used to be a great place to try the latest games when I were a lad.

I'm not the biggest fan of the NES (my allegiance is to the SMS, as you may know - we've met on Sega8bit, after all :P), but it'll be nice to see this back up and running. :)

Indeed, Sega is No.1 for sure :D I have a kinky thing for the NES recently, it can be our dirty secret (I won't tell anyone at Sega8Bit if you don't) :-o

Thanks for the comments guys, today I managed to removed the failed component in the hope I could identify it... I think i might be worth replacing the component next to it as well as the capacitors blood and guts are staining it (Unless I can clean it up).

I've e-mailed the seller and asked if he can help me out with the shipping but will probably order a couple at that price just incase it blows up again :)

I'm trying to figure out the role of this capacitor, I think it's a EMI Suppression X2 Capacitor.

"EMI suppression capacitors are used to suppress any noise from an electronic device by reducing the input impedance of the device."

This would suggest this part blew up to stop the whole board going up in flames...

Now it's a case of finding out what caused the problem in the first place... Maybe the Filter Inductor?

Ok what I've found out about the EMI suppressor circuit

Comprises of:
* Filter Inductor
* EMI suppressor
* PSU Fuse

The chain is in that order so the PSU Fuse doesn't protect the Inductor

A voltage surge may have caused the suppressor capacitor to short out which cause the inductor to melt.

The next step is to find out what make/model the Filter Inductor is so I can find a replacement, after that I will order both components and test.

If I can't find the replacement I will order a whole new board for £60 shipped
