Items spotted on eBay

The eBayPal 15% hit has destroyed the trade in quite a lot of items, long gone are the days you could pick up arcade related stuff on the cheap as people seem to overcompensate to cover the fees. If it's on eBay, it's on at around 150% of value. The sale of stuff like low value mvs carts is a joke; £20 minimum for **** like Fatal Fury and Super Sidekicks. Does anybody actually buy that stuff? Hardly anybody lists at 99p anymore it seems.

Given the amount of good prices I've seen, and bought i'm not convinced thats the case. ebay prices always vary wildly from week to week and nothing has really changed in that manner. Some sellers price highly just because they think people will pay it, or they have no idea what it's actually worth. This is true not just for arcade items, but all sorts of things. On the other hand a lot of things have gone down as well.

A lot of the ebay prices that have gone up are things that have increased in value outside of ebay as well.

I'm pretty froogle usually but even I admit the fees aren't bad for what you get.

It really depends what you are selling and what you get back. 10% might be ok on £20, it's a whole different thing when it's a £400 item.

As with anything else it's about balance. ebay might take £40 in fees off you, but you may still end up with the same amount of money as you would selling privately. It should be taken in relation to the item.

I still use eBay too, but not as much as I used to. The fees have steadily crept up over the years. The fees in themselves don't massively bother me but it has without a doubt changed the culture on eBay and it is no longer somewhere where you see a lot of stuff put up for auction to just find it's own level. Subsequently there are very few win moments to be had where you can pick something up for a bargain price. Everybody wants to maximise the sale price of stuff they list, it's all fixed priced listings, "refurbished" and "nearly new" **** etc.

If I go back through my eBay emails folder, 10 years ago I was picking up CPS2 boards for £30, MVS carts for under £10 etc on a reasonably regular basis, not every week, but often enough for it to be worth looking on eBay and having a bid on stuff. I know that value has increased, but the volume of items being put up for auction at a level worth bidding on has reduced dramatically. Almost a complete waste of time even looking for used items these days.

In 2005 I bought 4 CPS2 boards from the states for $170 shipped, which was like £90 at the time. Even accounting for inflation and exchange rate, you'd never ever get anywhere near that today. It's a ****.

It's like quoting Cave prices from 7 years ago when the buyers market was smaller and with less demand. The very game that started this debate is a prime example of ebay following the increase of private sale prices.

10 years ago is more than long enough for the market to have changed completely as a whole, not just because of ebay fees.

I don't even see how it's even possible to hike prices on ebay. There are occasional exceptions with rarer items and idiots but usually the completed items list doesn't ever go over the rough value. I've seen a fair few arcade boards (linked to recently on these pages) go for quite low prices.

Fees were capped at £40 until recently, now its a flat 10% (on BIN's at least)

As I said, I know that value has increased, but the volume of items being put up for auction at a level worth bidding on has reduced dramatically. YMMV.

The example I gave, value of the items at the time was roughly double what I paid. In my experience, the chances of picking up arcade related goods on eBay at 50% of value today, is zero. Maybe the fee system isn't directly to blame, who knows, but I stick by my opinion that the culture of the way items are listed on eBay has changed beyond recognition over the last 10 years and as a result I find it a much less attractive place to buy items.
