F355 to OutRun2

Post by outrun2 »

I've been offered a Ferrari F355 twin, minus the game boards, i/o boards and motor drive boards.

How different are these cabs to initialD/OR2 cabs wiring-wise? I've converted an initialD to OR2 quite easily but not worked on an F355. Would it be possible to just drop a Chihiro (or Naomi), standard i/o board and midi drive board in there or would the wiring that's left not marry up? I imagine the power for the mobo side of things would be a straight swap but the i/o and drive boards could be the big problem :problem:

I know the rest of the cab (control panel, pedals and monitor) would work fine - and with those paddle shifters would be very much like a 'proper' OR2SP cab..

Just wondering what to do with it - I only really want the red side panels off it for my OR2 but I do have space for one more twin and a spare Chihiro, i/o board and midi drive board :awe:

Yes, it's the perfect conversion cab IMO, the butterfly shifters FTW.

Re-wiring to F355/OR2 is a doddle, just a case of moving the pins from the old 32 and 40pin connector and putting on a single 60pin JST RA connector.

Wow, that simple? Just been checking out the type 1 and type 2 JVS i/o boards on your site so I see what you mean - handily you also supply the pinouts :)

So the motor drive board is a straight swap? The newer type found in iD/OR2 will plug straight into the F355 cab or do you have to keep the F355 drive board (which I won't have)? I know OR2 (not SP) will run with that setup (I read it at AGS first ;))

I might have to do this if the price is right :awe:

Thanks for your help.

Yeah the wiring from the motor board is the same from Scud to current, only thing you'd need is the midi board and midi cable - job done.

Mike at Racing challenge is getting rid of a lot of F355 twins.

That's good news, I have a spare midi board and I'm pretty sure I have a spare midi cable too. I checked a photo I have of an F355 'under the bonnet' this morning and noticed the different connectors on the drive boards - I can't find a wiring diagram for F355. Any idea what the other drive board mentioned in the manual is for? 838-13843 'DRIVE BD FRI'.

He is indeed - hasn't got many spare left now - might be one less if he takes a reasonable offer on the empty one ;)

Ok, I'm now looking into the motor drive board situation on these two cabs a bit more closely.

F355 has two separate boards to control the feedback similar to Model3 stuff:
1. 838-12912-01 SERVO MOTOR DRIVE BD NEW
f355_servo_motor_drive_board-838-12912-01.jpg
2. 838-13843 DRIVE BD FRI
f355_drive_board-838-13843.jpg
OutRun2 has just the one board:
1. 838-14174 SERVO MOTOR DRIVE BD MIDI
or2_servo_motor_drive_board.jpg
Am I right in thinking the second board in F355 (838-13843) can be discarded when converting to OutRun2? Looking at the wiring diagrams it appears that replacing the older SERVO MOTOR DRIVE BD (838-12912-01) with the newer MIDI board (838-14174) is a straightforward job as the power (CN5) and 2 connections to the control panel (CN1 & CN4) are the same. Only the CN2 connections are different - the 18-pin version on the F355 SERVO MOTOR DRIVE BD is replaced by the 8-pin MIDI CABLE on the OutRun2 MIDI board.

So it is just a case of removing both F355 drive boards, connecting the MIDI board to the existing CN1, CN4 & CN5 connections and connecting CN2 to the Chihiro board with a MIDI cable? That and swapping out the F355 I/O board for the OutRun2 version (837-13551-92) - moving pins from the 32 & 40-pin connectors to the 60-pin connector.

I just want to make sure of this as the F355 cabs I've been offered don't have any game boards, I/O boards or either drive boards.

Thanks :)
