Really great vid of the game:

Shame it's going to be stupidly expensive for at least 12 months (possibly longer considering Akai Katana hasn't really budged at all)

^ Yea, this vid is the best yet. Aesthetic completely aside, it looks really fun and really tough here. GP reckon's loke tests are always harder, but if the difficulty is maintained it really could be a reasonable successor to DOJ. Looking forward to seeing more of it now.

@Pang, you got your freak on over at shmups, lol! That's the finest display of forumspeek emotion I've witnessed for a while. :D

Yeah, that last vid is good. I like how the player jostles when he makes a close dodge, glad I'm not the only one who does this

The shmups forum topic is depressing, but it's understandable that people are going to complain about character art and terrible music.

..because people are dicks and gameplay evidently comes low down on the list of priorities.

Even worse are the people whom are slagging off aspects of the gameplay, despite the fact that:
  • it's an unfinished game
  • they've just made an assumption/had a knee-jerk reaction based upon a video or two they've seen of somebody else playing, but they've not yet even played the game themselves

gameplay is better to talk about after you've played the game, no? <--is being a dick

And for the record, OMG Bikinis and terrible stage 1 music!

I think it's safe to say that the final game will be 90% identical to the loke test.

If some of you are excited, that's great.

I honestly thought that I was going to see something totally different.

They basically used the same graphical flair from DFK, added a huge HUD and increased the difficulty.

Lazy at best - I hardly think this is going to be the next Ketsui, Pork or dare I say.. Progear?

I'm sure I'll check out the port at some point.. Hope I'm not as let down as I was with AK.

Oh, talking about it is fine. Dismissing it as awful with little other reasoning than "it looks crap, not at all what I had hoped" is perhaps a little premature.

Maybe not intentionally "lazy", they're just not taking any risks right now it would seem, but I guess that in itself could be a risky move.

I really do hope it turns out to be good enough so as not to be considered a flop.

I was expecting to see something different too, so I suppose lazy from a visual imagination perspective is fair comment (since they seem to have reused DFK's assets,) but certainly no judgement can be passed until the game is played. It might turn out to be a true DOJ successor in gameplay terms, long as it's rock hard and the patterns are up to scratch. I have no qualms with the graphics if it's balls to the wall fun.

Why wuz you let down by Akai Katana? It's a beauty that one.

I didn't play Arcade Mode that much, I thought the (was it arrange?) HD mode was better. I ended up clearing the game after about 5 days of playing... Never could really 100% grasp the scoring. Sometimes I would do great with my katana attack other times, not so much. Timing is key - but made the game less interesting. There were some cool boss fights and such. But I just didn't care for it. Had the scoring been a bit different or more focus on the enemies... When Cave came out and said it was a military shooter with a 50's style - I drooled at the possibilities. That could have been a successor to one of my favorite shooters, Progear.

I can't say that I hated AK, but I certainly don't miss it.

Now this new game... Sure, I would like to play it. But I don't see where this game is going to be much different from DFK. Yeah, the game is different. There are new scoring mechanics implemented and from the looks of it, a second method of boosting your score. But the DFK look a like graphics and gameplay style look very bland to me. It's kind of hard to explain, but some games have "charm" to them. This one could pass as an XBLA title. It looks like it could be difficult, but I don't see how Cave could even think about replicating DOJ in this title. This is more like DoDonPachi DFK 2. DOJ is a classic - you need a dark and gritty tone to the game. The music doesn't help.

I hate to pass judgement on something I haven't played, but say this was a shooter from a different company... Nobody would care. But since Cave developed it, I have to reserve my opinion until I play it?

Now maybe I can explain this better here... DFK, vs. DFK BL. - One thing that made DFK 1.5 really fun for me was the hyper canceling bullets and adding them to my hit counter, which in turn helped me score by keeping my chain. DFK BL was decent enough. But DFK 1.5 wasn't one of my favorites either.

Yeah, it looks a bit like DFK but it's bound to really innit. Seems like a more glossy future DDP though, a bit like Exelica like Skykid said. It's not my favourite art direction for a Cave game but it looks pretty and in no way lazy. Also, DFK 2.0? Really? I see much more in common with DOJ gameplay wise.

If Cave had surveyed the gaijin on what they want from a new DDP they would've asked for less bullet cancelling, more dodging, more challenge and less gimmicky scoring. Looks like they're on track.

Also, give AK arcade another chance. Progear is Cave's worst hori. The scoring blows. There, I said it :awe:

Damn you're wrong. :awe:

I understand when you're training your laser on large ships in SDOJ it holds the meter at 50% rather than 3%, which means chaining will be a lot more forgiving (laser big stuff, shoot small stuff = chain). The difficulty will depend on how tough the patterns make it to hold chaining routes. At the moment, expert looks pretty damn challenging, so in terms of play setup it's definitely more DOJ, less DFK.

And one third Trigger Heart.

lol, I read that quote and was like WTF? Fixed.

Anyway, I'll agree to disagree with you on this game. But I won't stand for you calling Progear Cave's worst hori - that's definitely AK.

I'd rather play the real DOJ than spend any money on the bag of candy that Cave is releasing.

The problem with ds is that it's not very difficult to beat the game if you don't look for score.
Not saying it's boring, if you go trough ex-stage unlocking the true death mode,
then the 2 final stage would be very challenging per-se.
I think the game really shine when you go for score.
When you go for score, the game change its face and it's no more dodging and destroying. (at least, not only)
I had a friend of mine last week who was in doubt about playing the game or not .
After a couple of minute it was like O__________O
the game is full of possibilities.

Most people want to destroy and make big score.
And most people complains because it has lolis, of course. And because look stupid.
An interstellar spaceship it's way better to boost video-penis.
