Wiring Point Blank to JAMMA?

Post by FrancoB »

I picked up a nice Point Blank recently consisting of the main board, gun I/O board and EMI board and I would like to wire it to JAMMA.

The board would have originally been connected to the PB cab via the EMI board and I would like to wire a JAMMA fingerboard etc to this.

This is the EMI board:

Image

On the left there is a 12 pin socket and a 20 pin IDC socket:

Image

Looking at the schematics the 12 pin socket is where the power enters the boards (5v, 12v, 24v and GND)

The 20 pin IDC socket has pins for video, speakers, service, test, coin, starts and GND

On the right hand side there is a 15 pin socket and a two pin socket.

Image

The 15 pin socket mainly contains the gun wires +5v, sensor, solenoid, trigger, GND. It also contains the 12v to power the lamps in the start buttons.

However I have no idea what the two pin socket is for. I've looked at the schematic but I can't seem to see it.

Does anyone know what it is for? There is a relay on the reverse of the PCB. I've had a quick zoom around with a meter but I can't really seem to work out what its for.

Image

Any ideas?

Ok, so wiring wise I'm thinking of the following:

Everything form the 20 pin IDC connector goes to a JAMMA fingerboard as well as the 5v, 12v and GND from the 12 pin connector.

24v/GND goes to the 12 pin connector from a 24v DC PSU I have for my Point Blank 2 setup.

The 15 pin conenctor will then go to the CP for the lamps and then onto the guns.

So to do this I'll need plugs for the 12, 15 and 20 pin sockets too. Possibly for the 2 pin socket too but I don't know what its for.

For the 20 pin socket I was thinking of using [this] which I imagine would work? Does that type of plug have the 'crimps' in it all ready and then you just strip the wires, put them in the 'crimps' and then close the top section to terminate the wires?

The 12 and 15 pin sockets are where I'm really struggling. I've asked a couple of people about them but we can't seem to figure out what they are. They almost look like 'mate n lok' but I don't think they are. They don't seem to have any identification marks/numbers on either the plugs or sockets.

Here are a couple more photos of the plugs from the cables that connect the boards up in case it helps.

And no, I don't know why my finger is so red

Has anyone got any ideas what connectors they are?

Point Blank manual/schematics are [here] if it helps.

Point Blank 3 has a 3-pin connector for 1P game, 2P game and GND.. See page 3 here http://www.tamdb.net/index.php?page=Man ... il&id=3106
But that seems to be something called J31.. then again there is some wierd symbol (circle with a loop in it) just over "PLAY PANEL Assy" i the schematics you linked to. That might be the relay.?

Thanks for the help dude :)

The circle in the loop is the symbol for a lamp/bulb. These are the lamps inside the large start buttons on the CP that flash when you have credits etc. The lamps themselves are fed from the 15 pin connector.

What looks to be the three pin 'J31' connector is actually part of the 20 pin IDC connector. If you look at the connector directly above it you will notice its also labelled J31. I think they must have moved it for clarity of the drawing.

However, the PB3 manual you linked to looks to have similar connectors in it and it has part numbers for them :D ......but unfortunately they don't seem to yield any results in google.

I think I'll email Namco UK/Brent Electronics to see if they have any of the connectors.

Still no idea about that two pin/relay connector though

I don't think so, no.

The recoil/solenoids are powered from pins 6 and 11 in the 15 pin housing.

My Point Blank 2 PCB uses the Namco guns with recoil and there are no relays on the PCB.

I have emailed Namco about the availability of the connectors. If the y get back to me satisfactorily I will ask them about that 2 pin connector.

Crazy eh? When I was looking for some Bishi Bashi info I stumbled upon a Facebook group for that too

Well, I emailed Namco on the off chance that they could help me and I had a surprising amount of success.

I asked if they still sold the parts from PB3 and also asked for prices. A very helpful chap called Peter Monaghan emailed me back and said they do stock them and gave me the prices. He also sent me a photo of the parts to make sure they were the right ones:

Image

The part numbers/prices for future reference are:

12 Way Amp Mini Plug Connector 66000667 £0.29p
15 Way Amp Mini Plug Connector 66000668 £0.35p
12/15 Way Amp Mini Plug Terminals 66500014 £0.04 PACK OF 100 = £4.00
20 Way JAE connector - PS-D4C20 with wires 69200065 £0.59p

He said that non account holders normally have to spend a minimum of £25 but he would put this order through for me :)

I also asked him about the two pin plug and he didn't know the answer but said he would find out for me. He came back to me with this:

I have been speaking to tech services about the e-mail sent yesterday and they have said that these connectors were used to plug strobe lights in for when you shoot, we never used this in the UK market, probably something to do with epilepsy but to answer your question we have never used them.

So, that makes more sense really. I didn't think It would have anything to do with the normal operation of the game/cabinet as everything else was covered from the other connectors.

Anyway, I've bought the connectors and he is going to ship them out to me.

I'm amazed at the level of home user customer service that I got from a company like Namco.

Franco did you get this going, would it not have been easier to wire it upto a jamma edge connector?

That's what I am doing. The 20way JAE connecter will be wired to a Jamma fingerboard as the JAE connector carries all of the 'Jamma' signals and the two Mini Amp plugs are going to be wired to AMP UP connectors so I can make some looms to run from the PCB to the CP.

I've not got it wired up yet as I need or order a load of AMP UP connectors from Akishop but I'm planning on ordering that over the next couple of days.

I have picked up another filter board for my Point Blank 2 PCB though so I can make up one loom adapter which will then fit both boards.

My PB2 board is a bit of a mess. Both sides of the Jamma edge connector are broken and there are wires soldered across to the fine pitched edge connector so I want to desolder that crap and use the filterboard instead which will also sort out the problem of the damaged Jamma edge connector.

Well, the 20 Way JAE connector - PS-D4C20 with wires 69200065 £0.59p didn't turn out to have wires, or come with crimps :palm:

Rather than email Brent/Namco about getting the contacts for it I had a look on ebay and found [these] which look like they should do the trick.

Image

I have no idea how you connect the wires to the contacts in those. Anyone have any ideas?

Fingers crossed they will arrive in the next couple of days and I can then get that section wired up at least :)

The contacts cut through the insulation on the ribbon.

Cheers cools. I was just writing this as you replied:

A little googling found me [this] lovely little PDF which shows how that type of IDC housing works.

It appears that that type uses IDE cable (duh :palm:) and the contacts pierce the IDE cable.

I guess I will need to use IDE cable then. A little more googling seems to show that IDE cable uses 28AWG wire. I'm a little concerned as this seems quite high gauge and I'm worried if it will be a little thin for the video signals. This section should only be about 10cm long though max so I'm hoping it will be ok. Oh well, there is one way to find out. I'll just have to butcher an old IDE cable when I could have just used something like [this]. Oh well.

I wonder if this is why Namco used the IDC housings with crimps. I imagine you can get larger gauge wire than 28AWG in those.

As cools said you'll be fine carrying video over that - the power is negligible. The best way I've found of making up IDC connectors is to make the sandwich of header - ribbon cable - IDC plug block, making sure that our ribbon cable is aligned at either end with the IDC contacts (the cable structure will keep the other wires in the correct positions) and then put the sandwich in a vice and slowly apply pressure until everything is compressed and the header latches click home.

I've used pliers to assemble smaller IDCs but it's often a bit of a gamble that you're applying pressure evenly.

Good luck!

Cheers guys.

I was going to use the IDC housing with the IDE cable but I was a bit concerned if I would be able to make a nice job of it using the IDE cable. I emailed Namco to see if they had crimps for the housings and they sent me the last of their remaining stock for free

Image

I'm planning on taking them to work tomorrow with the other housings/crimps and wiring them up :D

I can't finish the full looms as I still need to pick up a metric **** ton of AMP UP connectors but I should be able to wire enough to get it up and running :)

Bingo :awe:

Image

The terminal strips are only a temporary measure until I get some AMP UPs.

The 12 pin power connector and 20 pin IDC connector are wired to a JAMMA fingerboard.

The terminal strip with two terminals is for the 24v DC PSU. This will be replaced with a two pin AMP UP housing.

The terminal strip with four terminals behind the IDC loom is for the audio. Point blank outputs in stereo so I am going to wire in two four pin AMP UP connectors. If they are connected together then it will output Mono (or rather one side). If I unplug them I can then connect them to my Naomi or NACs stereo speakers with another cable.

The terminal strips coming from the 15 pin plug will be replaced with a 15 pin AMP UP plug which will then feed the looms that go to the CP but I have just used terminal strips for testing purposes.

Fired her up and all is good :D

Image

The only bit of strange behaviour I am getting is with the test button. If I press it it resets the board. If I hold it I can see the test screen and it then resets when I let go. When I press it it also activates that relay which I thought was to do with the strobe. **** knows what is going on there :?

Need to make a fricking huge board to mount it on now
