Re: Sega Driving Cab - STC to Initial D Conversion

Post by Spectre »

Yesterday's efforts finished off, two coats of paint and then the metalwork put back on with new fixings. Same as the foot plate, soaked them in rust remover overnight and then took the fight to them with a wire brush and some metal polish. Epic win on the base hinge which was totally siezed before, I thought it was going to be a write off but it now moves!

Image Image

Couple of fixings missing in the pic as I'm just waiting on a packet of new carriage bolts. My blurry pictures don't really do it justice, the two base boards look vastly better than before. 8-) Just need to clean the pedals and then the cosmetic work is pretty much done for now.

Looking good. It's going to look awesome when finished. Have you decided on artwork?

M5 30mm, they're also tagged "cup square" on eBay. I've made a list of various fixings from the stc manual and where they go, have just been picking them up off of eBay. I must admit I didn't have much of a clue on fixings before, but I just googled how to measure my existing fixings and matched them to the manual / what fits where on my cab. 8-)

Andygeezer has a full set of initial d artwork for me, it should match the blue fine as the artwork is black and white. I think idas1-3 will see the most play time in the cab so it makes sense, the idas2 artwork does have some blue in it tho...

A massive jump forward for the project this week, got the outside panels back from ultimate finish, plus andy came and installed all the hardware! She's running on compact flash 8-)

Image Image Image Image

Still quite a bit to do, but she's playable now (albeit using a box to sit on until the seat is ready). All controls working, vr panel lights up, card reader working, amps and speakers all working :awe:

Need to go to town with cable ties and wood screws to neaten up the loom and boards (will post some pics when done), sort out a permanent solution for the credit board and card reader, get the paintjob finished up (some touching up still to do), get the artwork applied, raise the funds to get a motor board in there for feedback, tri-sync the minty nanao tube I have here to replace the sanwa with god-awful virtua tennis burn in... she might be somewhere near done then! 8-)

Have got the artwork in-hand from andy, not even paid for yet, however it might not go on the cab for a while as the paintjob needs to be 100% first.

The nanao I have has a (knackered) 15/24 chassis, its the original monitor from stc. The tube is minty, but it will need a 31k chassis on there so thought a wei-ya/rodotron tri-sync was probably the easiest route.

Tbh didn't even consider if it would be easy/possible to get a compatible 31k only chassis for the nanao tube... any pointers appreciated, it's a ms9-29su

Very nice - certainly an original looking machine - bet it looks even better in the flesh. Be great when the decals are applied - I'm converting my iD cabs to OutRun2 so may have a few iD-specific spares if you find you need any. If (when!) I get a twin OR2 marquee I will have one of the iD marquee light boxes available..

Bet it sounds great with the gullbox speakers and especially the woofer - I've been meaning to connect mine up but I'm waiting to get one for the other side first for maximum impact! :awe:

Good to have the expert round to help with the wiring! ;)

Would deffo be interested in the lightbox, who knows what else tbh, anything which is in better condition than what I have I would be interested in at some stage!

The sound setup is fantastic, andy did a great job on the wiring so I could use the amps I already had from stc. It really pumps out the intro music when turned up, am also considering adding in the APC-1560/65 front speakers that go with these cabs! :awe:

I'm incredibly lucky that I happen to live so close to andy, this is the fourth cab/project he's given me a hand with now and he's been an absolute diamond every time. He's a very busy dude but has been willing to give up his time and help me out with stuff he wouldn't normally do, so I certainly appreciate it. God knows what I would have done with the wiring on this cab without him, it would have took a damn sight longer and cost me a hell of a lot more to get up and running, thats for sure... not to mention what I would have paid for idas1,2&3 software had I gone the gd-rom route.

So yeah, go buy something from http://www.andygeezerservices.co.uk folks! And while you're at it, get Ultimate Finish to give one of your cabs a custom paintjob!

Cool, another member has first dibs on my spare iD stuff but I have 2 cabs so there will be plenty to go round no doubt!

Not heard of those front speakers you mention - are they replacements for the ones fitted either side of the monitor or something completely different? I'll have to look into it..

Yes, you live in the right part of the country for cab help - I need to move so I can get my gullbox speakers hooked up! :o Fortunately andy still spares time for the rest of us not so lucky ones on here too - top man! :)

ID cabs speakers are APC type, the are lot nicer (as they have 2 mid range and 1 tweeter) than the older med range type as found in Daytona 1 etc (although on Daytona 1/SR1, Sega put two small tweaters in the control panel dashboard - nice touch).
Say hello to my little friend...

I don't have any front speakers (either side of the monitor), afaik this is normal for stc, I just have the gullbox speakers and woofer. I'd like to add the front apc initial d speakers at some point, just wire them into the l/r channel same as the gullbox speakers. Might be overkill though!

my id cab had no front speakers either, just gull and bass speakers.. i modded in a 5.1 pc system using the 2 gulls and bass shaker, then adding a speaker either side of the monitor and a center speaker inside the machine itself (under the monitor/above the pedals). sounds were amazing, i had independant volume controls for: surround, bass, front and master.. you can turn the surrounds and fronts down, the bass up full, then turn the master up.. this gives serious bass shaking, you can really feel the engine rev and change in road surface through the seat!

More shots of my ghetto steup while I wait to get the last two bits of the seat back (god-awful yellow being sprayed black). Took some time out of thrashing id1 to apply the artwork supplied by andy to the base of the cab. Also started to think about how to carve up the artwork for the seat back, I thought ahead and kept the yellow stripe insert vinyl from stc to use as a template, just need to create templates of the rest of the back to transfer onto the new artwork and snip snip!

Image Image

It's not very comfortable playing like this as you can't lean back with no seat! Still, have mastered myogi today and am now moving on to usui, loving the game already and it's going to have me very occupied between now and mastery of id3 (I'm going to play through them in sequence) 8-)
