nanao ms9 looks much better in 720x480i than 640x480i ??

Post by pubjoe »

I have a mamebox connected to my egret2 using soft15khz.

If I send the screen a 640x480i signal, it wobbles around like hell.

If I send it 720x480i, it doesn't look too bad.

I've mentioned this on SalorSat's soft15khz thread on arcade controls - but like most women, she seems to be ignoring me! :awe:

anyway, I wonder if this could be more of a monitor issue rather than a problem with the signal/mode I'm sending it.

Couple of photo's (much bigger difference in person though):

Is this a problem with my monitor, or most likely a problem with using evil nasty computers in cabs?

Cheers Grant. I thought that probably the case, but thought it worth asking here incase I'm barking up the wrong tree.

My ms9 looked pretty bad on 480i.

It had brightness bouncing and flickered.

I'm 99% certain the brightness bouncing is down to the age of the chassis. Am looking to recap mine at some point to find out (it takes ages to warm up anyway so I know it needs doing).

The flickering is the interlacing, nothing that can be done about that. You can either deal with it or not.

yeah but in 720x480i it looks soooo much better. Much less noticeable flickering.

I've got an atomiswave around somewhere. I'll try setting that up and see if it's any better than my PC+soft15khz is at displaying 640x480.

I thought that too cools but I had recapped it so I think the ms9 just doesn't like pop'n.
The ms31 has no brightness bouncing at all though.

Yeah, I tried some proper hardware and 640x480i looked a lot better.

I then added a different modeline to soft15khz and lo and behold, problem vanished. Now emulated vga games are worthwhile on my screen :awe:

Hi - really sorry to resurrect this thread - but Im having the same prob with screen flicker on my Hantarex Polo mk1 25". Im running a radeon x1650pro with soft15khz (worked beautifully on my WH 19") and Im getting heavy screen flicker with this screen. Can I ask what new modeline you added/how I would go about calculating one for myself? Id appreciate any help guys

Oh, sorry, I should have posted that in the first place...

Code: Select all

modeline '640x480new' 13.167 640 672 736 836 480 486 489 525 interlace -hsync -vsync
I put it in "custom15khz.txt", then re-installed 15k. Looks MUCH better. :D

(Thanks to SailorSat)

Brilliant, thanks very much for that. One thing, after I add the line to the text file & uninstall 15khz in order to re-install it...is there any way to do this without having to connect a pc monitor for the changeover?

you have to reboot after the 15khz install, simply do it on your arcade machine, the *CURRENT* modeline won't change until you actually attempt to change resolution. So just do the install on your screen, then, change your resolution to something low, then back.
