Anime, what you watching? Comics, what you reading?

Post by Lordstar »

This is a little thread about what anime your watching.

right now im watching Prince of tennis im about 80 episodes deep and im almost done with it. Its a lot like initial D but with tennis. Pretty samey all the way though but its enjoyable. A lot more than the fill fest that in naruto. After this im going to watch monster which is an excellent anime im about 30 episodes in to that too

Just got through Death Note & it's really good up to about 2/3rds of the way in, then it goes a bit skewed.
It's been a while though since an anime has gripped me right from the off - good characters, story & animation, top stuff 8-)

Not a mech in sight though Matt  Give it a try dude. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i1qcAPEI5U

I really need to get into anime again. Its hard to predict what I'll like though. Some movies are awesome (Akira, Miyazakis stuff) and some of the TV stuff is seriously addictive (Evangelion, Escaflowne, Initial D) but 70% of what I've watched I don't see what the fuss is about.

I recommend starting with some movies. Nice short bursts of quality should get you started up again

Metropolis - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Metropolis-Caro ... 365&sr=8-2"

Princess Mononoke - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Princess-Monono ... 419&sr=8-1"

Nausicaa Valley Of The Wind - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nausicaa-Valley ... 419&sr=8-2"

Tekkonkinkreet - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tekkonkinkreet- ... 41&sr=1-13"

Paprika - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Paprika-Dub-Sub ... 41&sr=1-16"

These are all pretty solid starts some are quite old but well driven by a great story others are newer but still quite interesting but visually Kane you eyeballs

The last two are avaliable on blueray and DVD

Seen the first three. Metropolis was pretty good, the other two are probably my favourite animated movies ever ;) I'll look into the others.

I take it you have seen most of ghibli studios?

http://www.onlineghibli.com/films.php"

Grave of the fire flies is depressing as hell ive still not watched that as every time i watch it i get upset and have to turn off (yes im such a girl)

Pom poko was actuality a surprised to me as to how good it was. I was expecting **** and have watched it about three times since i bought it about 8 months ago.

and finally poro rosso or the crimson pig. Its fantastic Its about the turning point in italy where the govment changed the laws and private guns for hire were no longer welcome. Strangely enough the main character is a man/pig but no one seems to care but it explains that a little later. It really is a beautiful film and the flight sequences and dog fights are perhaps some of the best ive seen all hand drawn.

Now some series

I will try to stick to the shorter series so its not too big a commitment

Area 88 - Is so well written and the dog fight scenes are amazing (done with CG) its about a guy who is about to marry the daughter of the prestigious airline group when his best friend takes him out a celebration drink. he wakes up to find he has signed up to a private army in the dangerous area 88 the only way to get out of the contract is to pay the exit contract fee, earn your way out by completing missions, or escape Very good had me hooked from the start its about 12 episodes i think maybe 22 at most

haibane renmei - which is unusual, I think its about purgatory, but not in the strictest sense. If i say anymore it would ruin the surprise. its twelve episodes long you could get though it on a lazy weekend and it had me hooked throughout

you can pick up AREA 88 cheap enough if you get the US version on DVD. think its about 16GBP inc P&P delivered. Renmei is avaliable in the UK but you will likley pay more than the us version which can come in one box set

I've seen everything but Earthsea, even the mediocre non-Miyazaki stuff. Miyazaki is in a league of his own.

its important to NOT watch the movie until after the series as it reveals a lot of character motives which kinda spoil the main bulk of the story. But technically you could slot it in between two episodes (i forgotted whicz onez?!?!)

The awesomeness of The OST of Samurai champloo is just crazy. I have it all on my MP3 player and its soooooo good. Its allmost all hip hop based but its 95% instrumental and its got everything from deep brooding lows to slow building rage right down to just taking a walk in the park tracks. You can download  them but i recommend hitting up ebay as you can pick up the four discs with about 17tracks a piece for peanuts right now. I think copying is not A bad thing (not that i would ever post links to such things) but if you really enjoy something its important to buy original and support the artists. I consider downloading like a trial period. My hard drive is a basically a list of things i need to buy

Earthsea is ok. Apparently he chose the weakest of the books to make the movie of. Its good but its not as grand as it could of been.

So which are your fave ghibli? Mine are the Cat returns , Proco rosso, Nausicaa and my friendly neighbor Totoro.

the last two i used to watch when i was about 8 when i was living in hong kong.

Well I'm sure I've bored everyone from KC expressing my love of SamChamp and CoBeBob, I've never watch a serial anime thats any better.

I was dissapionted with Earthsea to be fair, the story line opened loads of doors that it never really closed and it all seemed kinda piontless. The whole piont of anime as a medium is to express things visually that are otherwise un-suited in other mediums, great examples of this for me are Ghost in the Shell, or Paprika (stunning visuals) or even Tekkonkinkreet which is very stylised in is visuals and aid the story. Earthsea failed on all accounts as there was no story of any real weight and visually by studio Ghibli standards it was a dissapiontment.

Howls moving castle / Luputa / Nausicaa all have great storis that support the need for expressive animation, and in my opinion that is the piont of anime.
