SF2 HF CPS1 Jamma missing certain sound effects

Post by AtariVice »

I recently purchased a supergun from Jasen's Customs (with USB inputs - the supergun is awesome and very solidly built) and some games: Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition, Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting, Street Fighter Alpha 1, and Mortal Kombat 2. All were supposed to be working, but unfortunately, I'm having some issues with Hyper Fighting.

I have music and most sound effects, like punching and kicking. But I do not have most voice effects, like "sonic boom", "hadoken", "tiger", etc. and I don't have the announcer saying things like the character name or fight location. On the other hand, I do get certain special move sound effects like Chun Li's "yuh" when she throws a fireball or E. Honda's "huah". So it seems like a strange thing, and after searching, I didn't find anything online so I thought I'd ask here. Could it be a specific chip that does voices, that's gone bad?

Just as an example, if I go to Test Mode and enter the Sound Test, some sound codes play and others do not. So Chun Li's "yuh" (code D6H), laugh (DAH), and yet sah" (DDH) seem fine, but then other stuff like whatever E2H and 62H are, play back static. In-game, the static sound I get on test menu finds its way into the game but only on say a hadoken or shoryuken. So where he says "shoryuken" you hear mild static instead of the voice. So this is leading me to belive it's a bad voice chip or something along those lines.

I also noticed the introduction / demo had no sound at all. I fixed that by looking up the dip switches and flipping the correct one. I was hoping that the demo music was related to the sound effects, but unfortunately, when the demo music turned on, "hadoken", etc. still had no voices. On the dip switch list, I didn't see anything else potentially related to voices but then again the list I looked at had a disclaimer saying there were some mistakes (for one, it seems the order of the switches is reversed based on what worked for me turning on free play and demo sound). http://www.arcaderestoration.com/gamedi ... hting.aspx

Any thoughts would be appreciated as I was really hoping to run this game at some local FGC stuff in the near future.

Are you certain it's a legit board? From what I hear, bootleg SF2 boards have tendency to have removed or broken several sound effects, and the character voices for special moves were an example of some of them in what I read about it.

Pretty sure it's legit. The ebay seller has solid feedback, and more importantly, the board looks almost identical to my CE board, which is definitely authentic. Here's the auction just for reference, you can see severall pics: http://www.ebay.com/itm/311485019529.

Talking with a friend of mine on the scene, the guess is either one of the eproms are dead, or one of the traces on the board is broken so the signal isn't reaching where it's supposed to. Trace is an easy fix, eprom, not so much. I also found some discussion here: http://newlifegames.com/nlg/index.php?topic=1608.0 which is similar to what my friend is saying. So at this point I've more or less confirmed that it's a hardware problem, and given the seller sold it as "working", I'll have to go back to them and work out a resolution. Before I did that I wanted to be sure it wasn't something on my end.

Since you're missing only some of the sound effects I would say that unlabelled eprom is the likely cause. There might be some corruption due to exposure to direct sun light. Roms 18 and 19 contain the sound effects. 19 is the unlabelled one. Get someone to verify this rom against the same from the mame set and reprogram. Should also be an easy fix.

Thanks, makes sense. Now I just need to find someone in my area (Toronto) who can read/reprogram the eproms (or learn how to do it myself) :)
