Hantarex Polo 25" capacitor list/map and recap log

Post by keropi »

Hiya!

I am making this thread to document the process of recapping an EU Hantarex POLO 25" monitor , I decided to do that because after searching I only found partial info on the capacitors needed , or scattered info buried in threads or cap kits that are missing capacitors... maybe it's a regional thing and cap kits are complete for US/JP but they certainly are not for EU monitors.

I have used as a base the Cap Map created my Aval0n here: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showpos ... stcount=13 , so credits to him for that 8-)
What I did was to add the Pincushion Board caps , the missing C108 that my boards have , verified the marked polarity and add a capacitor list also stating what the original capacitor maker/series was.
I'd also post this on KLOV forum like the picture suggests but registering there seems it's not enough, you need either a recommendation or donation to post... :wtf:

I used this excellent page as a general guide for the job: http://www.organizedmassconfusion.org/h ... intenance/
After desoldering the components I ended up with this:

Image

...and this is the main board after cleaning and removing the capacitors:

Image

Searched for the capacitor datasheets that I could find (chemicon SME / SMG and Daewoo RSS series) and it seems that all are general purpose 2000hrs/85degrees ones. If anyone can verify or check the other series used and comment on that please do :)

For now I need to purchase some quality caps - the downside is that I must order them and wait a couple of weeks for them to arrive... naturally I'll get some quality Japanese caps, no cheaping out on this :awe: , will update the thread as work continues.

I also found this grey cable piece soldered to the neck board, anyone knows why it was soldered there? The monitor works fine without it being connected to anything, was this just an extra ground?

Image

That's it for now, if you have any comments/tips/recommendations please post them 8-) , I am good at soldering jobs but my knowledge in crt workings is limited to the basics...

Well, some caps are bulging - even the 220uf/400v snap-in in the PSU area and that cap isn't supposed to be stressed much...
I see no reason not to spend some 5-10eur more and get Nichicon ones for example instead of the LeLons I can get locally . The originals were not crappy ones, chemicon/daewoo/samsung are quality brands but time caught up with them.
I think I will be using a mix of Nichicon PX, CS and VZ series - whatever TME.EU has in stock .

There are a few inaccuracies:

C108 is in fact C107.
C146 is 4.7uF 63V.
C182 is 22uF 50V.

C108 / C107 :

Image

you are correct, C107 is the "single capacitor setup" - I will correct that

C146:

Image

I have 4 Polo 25" chassis: 2 of them have 4.7uf/63v caps , 2 of them have 1uf/100v ... it either does not matter or it's a revision thing... what do you make of this?

C182:

checked the 3 untouched chassis I have - you are correct I have marked that one wrong, thanks for pointing that out! :)

Not a critical difference but the manual also says 4.7uf.

I see... maybe I make a note? use whatever was installed on your chassis? 1uf or 4.7uf? It would be safer to state this I think... ?

Ended up ordering the capacitors for RS Components, a mix of Panasonic FC and Nichicon PW. Finished the recap and everything works as expected, no more screen size change when stuff happens in games 8-) Also pictured is a PSU I also recapped.

Now all that is left is to make an extension for the Remote Board so adjustments can be made with ease.

That connector has been unavailable for decades so making an extension isn't easy.

Oh god, you have the white LOPT (made by Semar), high failure rate on those.

This is what I am thinking about the extension:
- desolder the chassis connector and solder a good quality flat cable in it's place
- solder the connector at the end of the cable and relocate the remote board

I don't know the max safe length though, I *think* that the original was something like 180cm?

Regarding the LOPT I can't argue... used to have 3 working chassis, now I only have 2... one day the 3rd decided to work for 20sec - until the lopt started smelling of burning components :D
Is there a source for these nowdays? I am under the impression that they are really hard to find, is it true?

is this a good replacement? http://www.donberg.co.uk/descript/h/hr_7191.htm

It can be done but soldering wires directly to a PCB is risky because the wires break easily if they're moved/wiggled. To avoid this problem the professional method is using board-in crimp contacts like this:

Yes, and I see no reason to go any longer.

Yes but you can probably find one in your country and for cheaper.

Thanks for the info, I will look into some kind or connector to use for the remote board, maybe something like the one used for the neckboard.
I don't think I'll install an extension more than 90-100cm anyways, thanks for the confirmation.

PrincessPrinPrinI, I'll take this opportunity to ask 2 questions since it is obvious you know about the monitors: :D
- I only have some standard low-res boards atm, is this POLO 25" also capable of displaying 25khz signals?
- if you had to chose between this and a polo/2 110° 15/25AUT , which would be your preference assuming both crts are burn-free and working great?

It's 15khz only. When Sambers took over, before making the Polo/2, they hacked the older 15khz chassis to make them also work at 25Khz but it's such a bad hack. Personally I don't care about 25khz so I prefer the older 15khz chassis, those actually made by hantarex, not the sambers ****.

change the "White" flyback ... they are defected ..

and why you haven't change also the "poliestere" capacitors ? ( they cause a lot of problems expecially in polostar chassis ...)

Why is the white flyback defective? It works OK for now as far as I can see?
And what about the polyester ( is polyester correct?) capacitors?
Which of them needs replacing?

I am really new to this, please explain more :)

After several moths time to return to the project 8-)
I had to replace the LOPT and find a replacement tube... the LOPT was easy but the tube proved quite a challenge here. Luckily a friend had 2 of them and he gladly send them over :D

I am trying to manually calibrate the chassis , I found that after a while I get this discoloration on the right side:

Image

Is this because of incorrect brightness/contrast settings? Looks like overheating or something, it's that yellow tint on the right side of the screen.
The replacement tubes are A66EAS13X01 , I could not find A66ECY13X01 that were used originally.

Also on a related topic, is there a place that explains the general guidelines when adjusting color values? Or should I go with something like the 240p test suite and find settings that look good to me?

TIA for any info/help/tips!

edit:
I attach some photos from the megadrive 240p test suite, this is after I lowered contrast/brightness - any recommendations are welcome! I cannot make the right vertical limit of the screen to be a straight line - it wiggles a little at the bottom right corner and geometry potentiometers do not fix this completely.
There are borders in the screen on purpose since I have a groovymame setup now and I don't want to mess with dials when vertical games run on interlaced modes that exceed the tube's visible range... it's a compromise but there is plenty of space on a 28" tube :awe:

Did you try the keystone pot? Anyway it looks pretty good to me, I wouldn't bother. Use an external degausser.
