Sync separation anxiety

Post by Mayhem »

It seems the reason why many monitors dislike the Atomiswave VGA output is because it provides composite rather than separate syncs. My Samsung HDTV appears to be one of them, so I will attempt to solve the problem by permanently equipping the Atomiswave motherboard with a built-in sync separator.

Now the questions is this, is it kosher to just use a cheap LM1881 to extract V-sync for feeding into the proper pin, but still keep feeding C-sync into the H-sync pin? Or should I go for a more expensive IC with an auxiliary pure H-sync output, say a EL4583? Or just a slightly more complicated LM1881 circuit with additional logic gates to filter out the H-sync?

Opinions, ideas, anyone? Thanks!

Just thinking loud here.
During the vertical refresh, csync=vsync =hsync= 0 (negative sync polarity).

I'm not sure what the hsync is supposed to looks like during vertical refresh, for all I know it could be "undefined" in which case you should be ok. Also, I believe that the vsync circuitry has a higher priority than hsync, which would be along the lines of "I'm in vsync, ignore all hsync signals until I'm done".
