Really enjoying the new album, got me wanting to re-listen to all my other Cure albums.
It took me a few listens to really click but now I can’t get enough of it. It’s relentlessly dark and heavy, closest to Pornography perhaps. Smith is on top form.
Yeah there was a couple of songs that I wasnt over keen on, but I just love the whole thing now, particularly after watching them being performed at the Troxy.
Some people aren't keen on Reeves guitar style with the Cure, but i think its a welcome addition and helps some of the songs really come alive.
I'm currently listening to Architects new album, singles were very strong, the MV for Blackhole has crazy special effects (as well as being heavy AF with a catchy chorus).
With that said Sleep Token are posting some cryptic stuff, with a new single dropping (most likely) on the blood moon next week, fans have been spamming up the youtube link for an abservatory that is streaming moon footage (with that said Sleep Token did post some morse code that contained GPS coordinates for that observatory). Crazy stuff and I am happy to watch it all unfold as we are getting new music soon.
A couple of weeks ago I was trawling through Discogs looking for something, and stumbled upon this Belgian artist whose music released in the mid 80s sounds a bit like something from a CRPG released in the 90s. Buth with mambo influences.
My most recent Dead Can Dance phase ended abruptly because I simply can't stop listening to Mr Biscuit's dungeon tunes.
Ive listened to a fair amount of new stuff recently, but this is what stands out.
I love City Pop (late 70's 80's Jpop/jazz/funk style), and although there are a few artists making the same style of music now, it's nice to hear a fresh take - I stumbled across a track from an artist i had never heard of called pami, and whilst not all her stuff is City Pop - think more dreampop indie, this track ticked the boxes.
Sleep Token released their 2nd single from their upcoming album on Friday, the lyrics are a bit of a change in that they address some issues with fandom that have arisen since they got big, (as you know how scary some megafans can get), so the lyrics in this single seem a lot more specific and personal than they would usually be. The song hits hard in that respect.
The genres in this offering are Reagaeton and black metal.
That's how long it's been since we last had music from the heavy scousers LOATHE.
Then suddenly at the end of last week a new song was released - 'Gifted Every Strength'.
It seems to take the vibe from their 2020 album'I Let It In and It Took Everything' and run with it to new places. The heavy stuff is very fuzzy this time around and the vibier stuff very jazzy, with extremely smooth transitions between sections.
I really do like the sound of this and it ends much like the tracks on the previous album where it seems like it is blending into another song.
Despite the lack of new material over the last 5 years, Loathe have increased their listeners considerably (if we want to use Spotify as any metric), with no doubt the bands of the moment in the scene (knocked loose, Spiritbox etc) picking them as their support really helping to increase their fanbase and keep them relevant.
I was late to check out their last album, and if your not into heavier stuff (and even if you are!) then their music can be difficult to get into beacuse of the somewhat jarring difference in their song styles, but the album really flows listening to it as a whole. Anyway, enough prattling on, please check them out.

A recent (additional) surpise was an acoustic cover of a Sleep Token song -'Euclid'by solo guitarist Mike Dawes, an amazing rendtion of a really great song.
