Right ..On we plod, focusing on the Top cover/canopy.. it was not in too bad shape really! :palm:
So we have two complete cracks at the top above both speakers...
Most of the monitor bezel/glass holder brackets are missing completely/broken off!.
Dammit..lower two-part metal glass brackets are missing & the glass itself is long gone, because the lower holders have gone it probably fell out and smashed when the canopy was raised
First things first..the whole piece was chemical washed/dried & cracks jigged & glued with CA so everything was perfectly aligned for attack!.
The messy grey gloop you can see is super strength epoxy..it gets trimmed & sanded..later on, this is just basic setting..the whole area has to be uprated & made strong again.
Simple start...steady away.
Image
Image
All those speaker/grille towers were smashed off too!!...so CA to get everything back in place.
Templates must be made from card first, then made from 1mm alloy plate.
Image
Image
Image
The alloy has to be shaped to lay completely flat on the 'ruffed up' keyed area.
Trim off ally surplus with a file or barrel sander..
Image

Another piece of alloy has to be made to fit the upper cracked area exactly..like this~
Image
Image
Obtain the curvature carefully...
Image
You need to channel out the crack...like this~
Image
Oh, added work was a broken bolt on the hinge line ..
Out it comes.
Image
Remember to sand the side you are epoxying in place ...this has been set in place with 30min epoxy high strength...you can key the top & pour in more epoxy, but believe me, its not needed...this will be as strong if not stronger than before!.
Image
Then you are left with a hairline crack on the face...next to be made to dissapear.
Image
Image
Image
You need to channel out the crack like this~
Image
Image
That area will have to be sanded & skimmed with pastic repair paste & flatted back.
Exactly the same work & procedure for the opposite side..you already have your cardboard templates handy, just mirrored image.
Right i'm off for some supper, i'll be back later! :)

Christ on a bike! There are people with truly sentimental objects that don’t treat them with the care and respect you’re treating this cab!

This is honestly (and I won’t keep saying soppy **** after every post, I promise) heartening and inspiring stuff.

Can’t wait to see it in all it’s glory, but equally I’d love to see what you actually intend to do with it? Where will it end up? Are you as much into playing the games as having/restoring the machines?? I’m not asking for answers, I’m genuinely enjoying the ride!!

Always have one or two projects bubbling away Chris!...i'm at home in the garage!, let's be right about it..jobs got to be done right, if there's something i'm not happy with..i'll sort it, re- do it..whatever it takes...or it will drive me Nuts!..my ocd is much worse than ever! lol! :lolno: .
A decade ago i had like six minty cabs..two cabs stripped & restored ..the others were light restores.
All the cabs were played almost daily...played enough back then for a lot of my high scores still to be standing on shmups forum & indeed on here today!...
Almost beat BBH On Last Resort!...if you ain't got that it is an essential STG!.
Now i'm back & more hungry than ever!...this candy will be played my friend i can promise you that!. :awe:
I'll crack on then...stack loads still to do.

Ok...This Quality plastic filler comes highly recommended!!..'Silver hook' all quality products~
Image
Image
Image
Highly flexible & will not crack..easy mix & a pleasure to use & sand off.

All the bezel bracket fixtures had to be repaired & the complete bottom line amended...similar method as the CP latch fix.
Image

Had to buy some M4 & M5 Brass inserts for the fixing points...great these.
Image

The Glass bracket & Bezel sliding brackets were missing at the bottom, there are two of each on each side, so straight forward to copy onto steel & alloy.
I had some 2mm steel sheet to make one glass holding bracket exactly...MDK This is where the pillar drill comes in handy matey! :)
Image
Two original in the middle...mine on the right.
Image
That 2mm bend was tricky as its 2mm thick steel..steel starts to curve as you put in the right angled kick.
Your not trying to bend 2mm that would be almost impossible to do neatly, the steel was an extra 2" wider, so bend first then cut off to 2mm with metal slitting disc by hand.
The 2mm kick adds strength..that's all.

When assembled on the facia..you can see how it works, i have fast tracked here, you can see the top bracket already fashioned out of some alloy kick plate i found under my bench!!...worked like a treat and a 95% copy!.
Image
The bottom holds in the Glass & the top holds the Bezel...holes are elongated to slacken off & slide back SO you can rotate the bezel quickly & monitor..(wing nuts). (I used those sliver machine screws to check alignment & functionality etc).

Last Post of the night/morning!...
Shopped about for a key part...that protective glass for the CRT , so yeah its Toughened/Tempered glass..phoned up getting silly quotes from places miles away & ended up finding 'AC Glass' around the corner on Butterley street ! 8-) , they said a week...as its cut & then sent off for treatment..it also has 'Dubbed' edges so you don't slice yer fingers off!..looks good too.
It actually took 17 days, there was no rush though...& the best bit is that they charged me £20 !!.. :awe:
Never been more exited over a piece of glass!!..another part of the project completed.

Dubbed!!.

Moving on...

This two piece CP latch assy was found in the bottom of the cab, lucky it was there at all...but there was only one! :(
Image
No way was i going to find another one anytime soon, So...looking in my steel stock i had a sheet of the correct thickness, 2mm...
Lets knock another one up !.
Dismantle old one, measure & draw out onto sheet steel..i cut out using angle grinder with a steel slitting disc..easier & faster than a hacksaw.
Some Denbigh action for MDK ! :P
Easy part first..
Image
So far so good .
Image
Tricky part next .
Image
Reproduced!!..
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Lets get those painted!!!
Image
That's better!!...

Another couple of smaller metal components were missing too, but having the other pony stripped also i could easily copy more parts..
I copied the part first onto card & then onto steel...
Image
A couple of bends later & dressed with a file...its ready to be painted, i'm not anal enough to pay someone to chrome it or nickel plate it!
Image
That will be good enough!.
Image
Bit of paint...
Image

The Reject coin catcher spacer was next..& last part.
Image
Onto same thickness Ally.
Image
Image

Photo's not shown are the little square coin collector..that was all misshaped & that square coin return facia was even twisted!!..all re aligned , some oik must have tried to get in to it..as the main coin door was like a 'U' bolt too!! :( ...all sorted now.

Thread just keeps getting better. Great stuff...!

Question: What did you paint the metal CP lock brackets with? Anything special to help with wear and chipping if it was paint?

Cheers Lads!!...
RR...its just some alloy wheel paint i found up on the shelf...finished off with some 2k lacquer...once the latch is adjusted up/down the tang hits the slight ramp & in the middle it pulls/locks the cp in place..paint will only wear inside the ramp part...that's next to nothing.

Very nice work! I appreciate the extra effort you're putting in to do a proper restore job. Most people would probably slap it together or junk it.
