Forgot to add the capacitors in the amp section of your 6 slot also tend to drift, dry out and could do with being replaced.

Nothing wrong with Hantarex chassis or PSUs. I have had zero issues with mine after throwing new caps in them. The good thing about the monitors is that they use tubes and deflection yokes that are very common in regular TV sets. I have tube swapped all three common sizes, A48, A59 and A66.

That’s good news Nem, you ever found a decent donor TV for a MS8-26, that would be handy to know.

Grant seemed optimistic that he could cure all of my ills... however, if I need a new tube too then apparently I’m fairly lucky in that the size I need shouldn’t be super hard to find.

Fingers crossed the service sorts it!!

Sad news!!!

Grant’s had a look at the chassis and the silver lining is that the chassis appears to be in good nick.

The cloud to that silver lining is that this means the tube is weak and will need replacing :(

I’ll find out from Grant exactly what screen I need and then I guess I start looking out for one :(

are you certain you really need to change tube ? the pics look alright from what you posted and seem inline with what id expect from a hanty monitor ,always found them to be no where near as vibrant as any candy cab monitor.

Candy cabs also go dim and grey with age, I replaced all of my Nanao MS8-26’s due to this. I was lucky at the time Mo had a stack of them, I bought 4 before I got a pair of really good ones :awe:

Hopefully picking the chassis up later, and Grant has replaced a couple of bits in any case and recommends I try it out, so I’ll give it a bash and report back.

In comparison to the U4 it’s definitely far less vibrant, but there are a few specific areas I look at to see how it’s performing. On Metal Slug, the ‘how to play’ screen, ‘Metal Slug’ should be seen behind the controls, and before I removed the chassis this was basically unreadable.

Also, on Garou, on the player select screen, Butt’s hairline is a good place to check contrast and detail... again, the hair and shaded areas blended together before it was sent off...

Let’s see what happens when I get it plugged back in...

What's your reference? Perhaps your expectations of 30 year old arcade monitors are a little high.

Direct comparison with the U4 next to it...

Edit: to be fair, that’s the only other CRT I’ve looked at in 15 years :P

 Fair enough, but I recall you were a bit nit-picky with that at first. Nothing wrong with that of course, I was just wondering if you'd been playing MVS on a PVM or something before you got the cabs.

even though some hanty's have a very good pic, my point still stands I've never seen a hanty come close pic wise to a nanao or that especially side by side

All of my Hantys are bright and vibrant (but I've tube swapped all but one).

What's the tube model on the Neo? It's on the sticker on the back of the tube.

Well... I certainly don't need a new tube!!

Grant's outstanding!!!

I don't mean to do his legs by giving people unrealistic expectations of him, but the brightness and vibrance has enormously improved, it was cheaper than I expected, and it was literally 24 hours between dropping off both the chassis and PSU and picking them up again.

I'm a very happy camper

Nice!

(I would still swap it for a 'new' tube. It's so easy, it would be rude not to! :awe: viewtopic.php?p=484955#p484955)

Have you ever seen new Hantarex, the problem I had I with new ones they were too bright and sharp, especially the Polostar I could never get the contrast quite right.

I think a crt is designed to look at his best after a few 1000 hours run in, a bit like hifi. (I jest of course with hifi, that’s just imagination) :hinthint:

Few bits left to do on the Electrocoin, then I need to work out what I’m doing about getting the U4 CP and doors shot blasted and powder coated, then a bit of cosmetic stuff and maybe decorate the room a little, and clear out all the crap that came with restoring these bad boys...

Then I’m dangerously close to needing another project!!

@SuperPang , I had been playing emulated versions, which gave me an idea of how certain games ‘should’ look, but I was able to get the majority of that dialled in on the U4. That really was my only other point of comparison though, so I certainly welcome input when I’m looking for or expecting too much.
