For the same reason an empty room sounds different to a furnished one.

Obviously I realise speakers sound better when they are elevated from the floor. What I don't understand is the how two different stands can have a "massively" different effect on the sound.

They don't it is the mind playing tricks on the listener, if it looks better some believe it sounds better.

It is the same with speaker cables and interconnects! Bi wiring is another. None of these are measurable or a difference spotted in a blind test.

But that is the fun of being an audiophool, I have tried them all and get tricked every time!

Pete was saying at the weekend that he spoke to a guy (engineer?) at Quad & he said the same thing about cables. He said the cable used in the speaker cab, between terminal & the actual speaker, is nothing special & that it has no impact on the shound.

I've never been dragged into the whole cable thing, I think the most I've paid was £20 for a custom made scart cable. As lone as the gauge of wire is decent, what else can you do?

Anyway, I am new to this, so obviously suseptible to the marketing, but speaker stands have no impact, it's just the positioning (i.e. ear hight)?

Cables = don't buy total rubbish and there's no difference.

Stands do make a difference, but it's heavily dependent on how much volume you're kicking out and what type of music. Bolted to a big lump of cast iron filled with sand compared with bolted to one made of hardwood and you'll hear the difference.

I'm using QED wire of some description just now. IIRC it was about £2 pm I needed 30 odd in the end (I actually should have bought 34 :?) for 7.1, so cost was a big factor. it seems to do the trick.

I wont be rocking the house down, I live in a semi, so I can't see me pumping out drum & bass at max volume ever. So decent stands, that look nice shoud do the trick?

Yep, they're a solid sealed casing and completely unfussy about positioning. Shame they're not zebrano.
