Great job Paulie. How exactly do you clean the wiring and other electronic parts? Thanks

Re: Sega Naomi restoration work in progress Updated Sat 14/7
The wiring was cleaned with a lightly damped cloth.
The electronic parts, well theres not much in a Naomi were cleaned with an anti static brush and I used and cotton bud with isopropyl. I didn't touch the monitor electronics as they still scare me

Have just tried a few spots of my cp upper with the ss cleaner and it has made a difference, certainly removing the grubby look and smoothing things out in a way that soap and water didn't. I'm confident now that this stuff will give me the same results as you with a little effort

Re: Sega Naomi restoration work in progress Updated Sat 14/7

It should look lovely when you've spent some time on it and followed with the Novus 3>2>1
I also used Tcut on some areas of the plastics too which is pretty good but not a patch on the SS cleaner.
Good luck buddy, I know there's loads of Naomi threads but please post some pictures as I really enjoy seeing what others do

Re: Sega Naomi restoration work in progress Updated Sat 14/7
I know it's been yonks since I last did any work on this cab, but did a couple of bits today.
I chopped the leg covers.
This is dead easy, remember the magic number from chopping the legs? well never mind you should measure them to size anyway as there may be some slight variation. I cut them slightly large (336mm off the bottoms) with a hacksaw. This gave me a little to play with, I filed the last mm or so off by hand to get a really nice fit.
As always measure twice cut once, and you can't go wrong.
I'm going to strip and polish them and add some nice NOS NNC art which I already have.
Long legs

Chopped

Nice fit

I put them on for the time being, just so they are not cluttering up the garage. Remember you need to remove the CP bucket, plastic monitor surround and the leg hooks to put them back on. If you don't know how to do this just have a look at some of my earlier posts in this thread and it's just in reverse.
I fitted a new monitor mask. I got this from Craig http://www.giz10p.co.uk/index.php?_a=vi ... ductId=323" last summer but didn't want to fit it until I moved house.
This is a dead easy little job. The tools that you will need for dismantling this area are: Screwdriver with a few interchangeable heads (Pozi heads 1, Torx T30)
1. Open the control panel.
2. Remove the 2 screws (pozi head) that hold the monitor surround plastic to the control panel base.
3. Remove the 4 screen caps (NOA-1006) these can be slid out once you have pressed the little tab that snap them in place. Just be careful as the tabs seem pretty fragile.
4. Remove the 4 chrome Torx bolts (T30 bit)
5. Carefully take of the Monitor surround.
5. Flip it over and lay it on something soft, you don't want to scratch it.
6. Take out the 6 screws (pozi 1) that hold the monitor mask in place.
7. Pop the new monitor mask in position and put the screws back in.
8. Put it all back together.
As I had the rear monitor cover (NOA-1200) off I thought I would kill two birds with one stone and fit a new pair of speakers. I got these from thechop a while ago as one of mine was pretty crackly and the other was blowing like **** so I had to have that one disconnected.
Again another very easy little job. The tools that you will need for dismantling this area are: Screwdriver with a few interchangeable heads (Pozi heads 1, Torx T30)
1. Open the control panel.
2. Unattach the 2 speaker connectors. As you look at them, white will be on the left and red is on the right.
3. Remove the 6 chrome Torx bolts (T30 bit) that hold the rear monitor cover (NOA-1200) in place
4. Remove the 4 screws (pozi 1 that hold each speaker in the housing.
5. Remove the 2 crimps that are attached to each of the the speakers.
6. Attach the crimps to the new speakers (you can't go wrong as + & - are different sizes).
7. Put it all back together.
Thought I would fire her up and have a couple of credits. Mobo fan starts up, no picture, no sound, and the marquee light didn't come on. No pop, no burning smell, just a whole lot of nothing!
So I...
1. Checked the voltages with Franny's lovely volt meter. All were spot on.
2. Worked my way around the cab checking all of the connectors, all looked fine.
3. **** about doing #1 & 2 for the rest of the day.
Fast forward 6 & 1/4 hours and not much has changed apart from now I get the hum of the speakers, and sounds like monitor is coming on when I turn the power on and when I turn it off the monitor flashes white. I'm thinking it's because I've not touched it since Christmas, it's cold and possibly got some moisture in the monitor. After a bit of reading it seems to be a well known, common problem with this Nano monitor, so fingers crossed she's just feeling the cold. I read a few people say have a blast around the back of the monitor with a hair dryer for a few minutes so might try that later.

Cheers Emph,
On power up, I now get the the mobo fan, the regular speaker noise and the regualr sound that the monitor is coming on, monitor also has that slight static to the screen if you touch it and flashes white when turned off. I think shes slowly warming up, but if thats the not the problem, then I'll probably deffo be venturing a bit out of my depth
Please work

I got....

ok its only a small white line, but thats more than I've had all day so theres still hope.
More hair drying and hair pulling and I got the Naomi splash screen the game loading now... but it didn't load NoooooOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
So turned it off, re-seated the cart, flicked it back on and got the little white line again

Even more hair drying and hair pulling. Then ...

And before anyone chimes up complaining about all the smileys, I don't care beacuse I'm so hapy she's working again.
Gonna leave her on until I go to bed.
Inbetween all this I went to collect a Sega ashtray to sit on my Naomi CP to hold my £1 coins. Unbelievably cadman only lives a 4 min drive from my house, really nice bloke too, thanks again mate

No, the mobo was powering on, all voltages were perfect but I was getting no sound and nothing from the monitor at all.cools wrote:Does it play blind?
Looks like she was cold, but I'm still gonna be twitchy when I turn her on whilst it's cold.

Big thanks paulie! I Just chopped my naomi uni today and I have to admit your posts were the very reason I was able to do it today and not next month or so.
Since the "original guide" in that sega thread doesn't have the pictures anymore, this topic has at the moment by far - seriously - the best pictures and explanations how to do the job
one more thing I have to say, the attention you give to even unnecessary details - like cleaning every god damn dust particle and stain even from inside the cab and how you accurately drilled the legs that no one is never going to see - gives me a weird unexplanable satisfaction. tears of joy

There is not much in this world that rivals the awesome feeling of turning on an electronic device you presumed not working which all of a sudden works without you having done anything to it
